last yearI think Wumi’s idea of film on the window sounds a great idea. Privacy without blocking the light. We used window film where I used to work and it really does the job. There are lots of suppliers online. I’m not sure about wall colour but I hope someone else will!

Comments (31)I have to say that I don’t ‘get’ why people copy trends. I choose colours because I think they’ll look good to me, and suit the space, and I certainly don’t want to have to redecorate just because I find I can’t live with it. It’s taken me years with my present house’s north facing cloakroom, as I’d never had spaces with that particular north light, before, and I’ve lived in many different houses all over the world. Taking professional advice turned out to be wrong, as well, in that case. Fortunately, with the larger north facing and darker hall, I got it right, 15 years ago, and ever since it’s been a pale aqua, which looks both light, spacious, and oddly enough, being a cool colour, warm, rather than cold. It’s very easy on the eye, and acts almost as a neutral. But the other thing about following trends, is that you end up with the same thing as everybody else, and who wants that? Hm. Maybe some like to be part of a tribe? Perhaps that’s why magnolia paint used to be the go-to colour everywhere....See More

last yearCan you post some photos? Light colours relfect light, but they can't 'create' light where there is none. This means that in a dim room, pure white can look like pale grey, but the same white in a light room with look brighter and whiter. This is not to say to go dark, but perhaps a warmer pale colour can be the best option. Patrick O'Donnell recently did an imstagram post about this very subject and his sugestion was if there is little light then go a bit warmer. This is something I have always thought, but the trend for cool greys in the last ten years has often ignored this advice. Now that warm colours have firmly been reintroduced, there are plenty of inspirational images to look at. If you are after a neutral, then the best one I have found is 'Paint and Paper Library Stone' (probably Stone 3) as it has enought colour and warmth to look like a warm pale neutral, it just seems to work. Yeloow is thought to be the only colour that can create the illusion of light when light is scarce, but it's not for everyone. I like the suggesitons above about film on the windows.
The pinkish colours in the Little Greene range are also worth looking at - the palest, 'Ferdinand' could be good for bouncing light around and bringing in some warmth. Beauvais Lilac also works well in dim spaces.

This is the room... with maximum available natural light. We can't afford to get the beam blasted but I did see a hack of painting it then using a woodstain wax by frenchic which I think would be a good temporary option to lighten things up. We don't want to change the darker sofa as we have kids, and cats that like to tear the furniture to shreds. I'm not a fan of yellow so don't want to go that route...

last yearLooks like you have space for a rail below the beam. You just have to go with your situation. I would go for a thinner rail, maybe wrought iron which always looks good in a cottage, and then some floaty cotton curtains. Of course any other rail would do as long as it’s a thinner one. Other option is a Roman blind which can sit above or within the window. Or even a simple roller blind in a pretty pattern.
