Roof lights - how many?

Hello we are having an extension done. The architect has suggested some sky lights (the dotted lines on the picture). The squares are 1m*1m and the rectangle one we are thinking 2m*1m. It's a flat roof and they will be flat windows.
I'm just wondering....
For the 1m*1m will this actually let in much light given the roof is flat? House front faces NE. Is three roof lights too much?

When you extend it can make the rest of rhe house dark, so skylights really make the difference. It looks good to me.

Over a 1.6 mtr Island I would go for just the 2 as there is no Appliances in it spacing should be approx. 900mm centre to centre which would give 350mm centre to edge of island. the 3 pendants look good over the table but 3 might be a bit busy over an Island, one other thing to consider tho is the output of each light and if low output then maybe 3 could be better but without that information it is a bit hit and miss. Do you have downlights too , all these various elements go to towards the spread of light , so very little shadowing is best.

Hi Jacqueline Don't worry about the lumens, its a bit technical and not really helpful unless you want task lighting for work. In laymen's terms - circuits = light switches. I'm assuming you are starting from fresh, which is probably the best way forward. Items 1 & 2, as I have described above are to work together. The idea is to have a flexible option. You can have a standard lamp and table lamps on or if you want more light you can also turn on the LED down lights. If you've stuck with what you ave I would just add the lamps, say 1 standard and 2 table lamps. You can put in bulbs that provide bright or dim light, to suit your needs. It may be worth speaking to the electrician if you're not as keen on swagging. I know they can run a "pipe" through the ceiling void with the cabling in to put extra outlets and then just drill a hole from underneath the ceiling for the light but that is dependant on the joist direction etc though. That may not be feasible for what you want to do but may be worth asking the question anyway! If not, choose hooks that blend in with the ceiling? It will be easier to assess position this way too as you can just get the electrician to hold each one up for assessment before fixing! A general rule is that lights should be 1/2 - 2/3 of the tables width and normally hung 30-36 inches above the table. Given the double height I'd probably just start the lowest pendant c40-46 inches but I'm not sure on your total ceiling height and even though it's a feature you want to make sure the table is sufficiently lit! Depends on lots of things ... how big are the lights ? Is the seating anywhere on the island ? Is there a hob on the island ? Is there a sink? Is there a skylight above anywhere? What other lighting is in place over it?

No, personally I would say they wouldn't get a lot of light in. You could try stencilling it out on the floor in tape - this helps give you some perspective on the size of that.

I usually do a minimum of 1.2m x 1m.

Personally, I would lose the middle one and go for two larger ones - anywhere up to 2m x 1m would be good. I also prefer the rectangle look rather than the square as it will elongate the space and draw the eye up and out of the back.

Has your architect done some quick 3D's to show you how the space will look? That can often help lots with these types of decisions - it's a big costly mistake to make if they are wrong or don't get you the light required.

Thanks Gina, so keep the one over the kitchen and the one towards the soft seating area? Would you have the kitchen one going in the direction of the peninsula? Many thanks!
