Layout ideas for living room

last year

We’re moving to out new house and would like to get ideas on the layout for maximising the seating space while using the room for entertainment purposes.

There is fireplace on one wall (opposite the door). Bay window opposite the conservatory. What would be the best way to place the sofas/chairs etc.

Holly, not a bad dialema and what great spaces you have to play with! There are so many options for you here. I have worked on these type of properties for over 9 years and I always provide the same advice to a client. You will need to consider how you want to use the space/the environment that you want to create in order to determine where you will place the furniture. Key elements such as how you intend to travel through the property, what is practical for you, how your family spend their time at home etc. will all dictate the interior configuration. For example, some of my clients would look to create a formal reception room at the front of the property, introducing a door from the hallway. They would then utilise the second reception room as a play/TV area, library, piano space or even insert the kitchen within this zone and create a very large open plan dining/entertainment space (large sofa/TV area) at the rear, directly connected to the garden. As you can see there are so many points to consider. Have you thought about appointing a team to assist you with the space planning/visualising how it could look?

Hi Simon, that is such a lovely room and I love the wall colour. Lovely and bright too. You say you’d love two sofas facing each other, but in reality it would make watching the tv almost impossible and there will be little space for access to each end of the room. If I did that in my living room, the tv would end up over my shoulder and the other sofa would block a door! I’m not sure how wide your bay window is with the high armchair, but I wonder if you could fit a small sofa there instead? I assume you haven’t already got a suitable sofa elsewhere. You could bring the leather chair at the other end of the room forward near to the sofa and place the tall armchair in its place? And of course the teepee must take pride of place 😊

Hello Celia Reis, Lots to think about... It does not matter what you have but where you place it to make it work. And what is there that make the room become one (sounds very yoda ) :) How about putting the sofa by the window. The box where the sofa was. See what that looks like? The side table in between the sofa and the chair. Add some shelving to the alcoves. Re: photos There are lots of photo places that will make photos much larger for a portrait. Group pictures together on the shelf or on the side table. You do not need to space everything out. Some questions: 1.What colour are the walls ? 2.What colours do you like ? Is there a favourite material you like that can be made into a paint colour or made into some cushions. Then use the colour throughout as accents. 3. What items did you want to repurpose? What colour ? 4. Can the cabinet fit in the alcove? 5. Does the fireplace work? 6. Do you have any larger pictures, photos ? 7. Are both lamps the same size ? What are they to be the same colour ? 8. Will there be a TV in the room ? Some pics to help. Are there any elements in these pics that help? So change the placement of furniture like in the pictures. I would look to swap the tv and sofa position - as it's already been suggested a divider/feature panelled wall with the tv mounted/housed would look amazing and really help to make the room feel less corridor like and instead like a room in it's own right.
