Cheap uplifts for a kitchen - help needed!

Hi All,

I really want to update this kitchen, but have a tiny budget. Any suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated.

I think those tiles are awful for starters - replace wall and floor tiles? The fake wood doors are not pretty... are they irredeemable or would replacing the handles (perhaps to black handles??) look better? Remove wall cupboards and replace with shelves?! Open to any and all suggestions!

If the cupboards aren't damaged or scuffed up, i would leave in place. They might be fake wood, but the blonde/light coloring looks good and is able to be worked with. You also have darker worktops, and floors too, another plus. The dating elements are the tile and wall color. I think changes to those elements, and maybe your hardware, and it will give you a new room. Some examples to help visualize the wall, hardware and tile options.....

As you say, the tiles are awful and far too busy. I would find a simple white tile and remove the ones you have and replace with white ones in whatever configuration you like. Changing the worktop to possibly a white laminate will lighten everything up. To keep costs down remove the tiling yourself if you are able, but get a proper tiler to fit the new ones. Tiling is a real skill. Paint the walls white. See how it looks before removing anything else.

Wow, you have done a great job already with your kitchen. You have had so many great ideas re. the wall there isn't anything on that I could add. To solve the problem of the chairs hitting the wall I would either opt for a huge floor to ceiling mirror which would encourage one and all to be careful when leaving their seat or my preferred option would be to replace the chairs on that side with a bench. I'd cover the bench in either shabby chic cushions or a deer or sheepskin rug for comfort and I'd play with table decor. Get chair covers for the redundant chairs and use them in the bedrooms - one in each corner. Then for formal dinner parties or for when the table is extended you simply remove the covers and add them to the table and you can still use the bench if the table is extended.

Agreeing with the microwave. Also, I don't think the space to the left of the kitchen area is big enough for much use and that the kitchen doesn't afford quite enough storage. I'd add more units, bring the microwave down to counter level and change the right hand corner to a corner unit. I personally wouldn't have the free standing fridge freezer, but I understand they're popular. ( I definitely wouldn't buy Smeg, but that's another story! ). However, in summary, more units, move the microwave etc If you don't have the room for more units going to the left as you were going to use the space for something else, then sacrifice the island and have a U-shaped Kitchen to gain more units and worktop. Crikey, How did that happen? Is the kitchen relatively new or has it been fitted for quite a while; you may find that if the kitchen Is old, prospective buyers may want to replace It anyway. Could you get a colour matched door, as close as possible? or find a second hand replacement online, eg. Gumtree / eBay /etc. if worst comes to worst, you could possibly look at changing the doors/ end panels for the Base units only to create a two-toned kitchen. Good Luck

With that budget you should swap the worktop and tiles and paint the walls. New handles would be nice but the worktop and tiles should be priority.

I would choose a pale worktop that looks like stone. Then white or pale tiles. Then paint the walls grey/green (ash grey- Farrow and Ball?) to tone down the orange quality of the cabinets and floor.

I think we will all have different ideas. For me the first thing you see are the Maple doors which are really dated. l would paint or replace them and the cheapest way to replace them is with cut and edge board doors (slab doors). You would also need end panels and plinths if you replace them.

Then of course those tiles just have to go. Could you paint them?

If you swap the worktop you will need a gas safe contractor to disconnect it and then reconnect it and they are not cheap, so l would keep the worktops.
