Shimmering mosaic strips ideas - practical?

Bathroom plans - ordered light grey tiles for dark bathroom. Is it a good idea to add strips of glass/metallic tiles or is it not practical? Just like the photo below, to look like cascading shimmer down one side of the bath tub wall. Any other ideas how to bring to liven up a grey bathroom?

Mosaics, I would assume, could be a bit awkward due to all the grout lines for cleaning but I don’t have them myself so can’t offer specific advice. You can liven up a grey bathroom with brighter coloured towels & accessories, eg a patterned blind. A couple of plants and / or wooden items always helps.

I have mosaic tiles in various iridescent greens and blues in a strip as per your sample pic and also as a splashback to the sink and I love them. There is a lot of grouting but I don’t find them difficult to clean. One tip given to me was to ensure the mosaic tiles are the same thickness as the plain tiles so they are all one level.

Your plans sound great. The best way to save your sanity is to get a good contractor that you trust (I know, they are rare animals) but reputable, professional companies often save you money, time and mental health than those cheap 'cowboy' builders that don't know what they are doing. About the flooring, I see no problem in having different type of wood on each floor. I think the only problem with that is the stairs and landings. It may look strange to have a different kind of wood on the landing than the wood of the stair treads, but if you cover them in carpet then there's no issue. (Argument for the wife: the floor should match the wood of the stairs, if you keep the Minton tiles, you won't have a problem, however if you put engineered wood in the hall, then you'd have to have the stairs in the same wood, otherwise it can look strange... try and see if that works :)) About the windows, we were able to reach an 'undocumented' agreement with the council conservation officer. As long as we keep single glazing downstairs, so it respects the conservation rules, we can have double glazing on the first and second floor, as it's hard to tell the difference looking up from the street level. So we had a joiner who made us new sash windows but with double glazing for the upper floors. If I remember correctly the discussions at the time, there are also some newish products they use for listed properties: this ultra thin glass panels placed at a very close range to each other.... best is if you google "double glazing listed sash windows" and have a look at the results. https://www.google.co.uk/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=double%20glazing%20listed%20sash%20windows Seriously, insulation is paramount for an efficient underfloor heating system. Try your best to have as much insulation as you can. For the attic, we used thick board, then this aluminium membrane, then the foiled covered plasterboards. It seemed a bit of a kill at the time, but trust me, our loft is now the warmest area in the house (see pics below). Look into different types of insulation, you can find thinner boards or some membrane you can use behind plasterboards. Hope this helps. Nite-nite!

WOW, what amazing ideas - who's up for forming an Interior Design Company around the UK - could be great fun! One thing not mentioned is that I would move the microwave immediately and put it where it has work surface at each side for safety. Where the micro was put a huge shallow glass brightly coloured bowl (TK Maxx/Ikea) and fill with either different coloured glass 'eggs' - Murano, Caithness etc, adding from each holiday or, which I've also done, fill with coloured crystal bauble string lights - I just drop them in and switch on when I feel like it. I've just bought a stunning Lava lamp - pink for my kitchen - tho' they come in a number of colours. There are some really funky fish tanks around too. I have a pink one shaped like a cats head ( lol as I have cats) and a square one, very architectural, with viewing 'shapes' cut out. They're no more then 6 inches high and some colourful fish prefer to be solo, or would you kill them along with the plants? Lol. Hope you manage to find great advice from all who answered you. Bee

Thanks everyone for their help! I ended up falling in love with a glass grey metallic tile from Fired Earth in their glass elements range. I’m tiling the whole shower area in it. For around the bath I’ve got Matt 10x20 white tiles that I’m going to do halfway up the wall and then have a custom mirror made for the top half. The Matt tiles are also going to go around the sink area. Will post pics once done, need to pick the grout colour for the glass tiles still, because they change colour it’s hard to match!

Toria - are you able to take some more recent photos that show a little more of the room? Your last post mentions mixing a colour for below the picture rail, but I can’t see a picture rail in the photo. Can I also ask a delicate question - I’ve read your post several times and appreciate the emotional ties, but what is the purpose of this makeover? Is this a house that you personally live in and will remain in, or are you preparing to put it on the market? The outcome of that question could result in different suggestions! If you intend to remain in the house, go with whatever makes you happy. Sadly, if the aim is to get it into a sellable condition, buyers are likely to want as neutral as possible because the reality is that they may very well rip it out and start again. For what it’s worth, I think your blue tones are not quite muted enough - they are all quite bright. I’m also not sure about having the peachy colours with the blue colours, one above the other separated by a picture rail or dado rail. You might be better sticking to just one colour throughout - especially as you have a coloured suite plus the tiles. Any more than that could look very busy (unless it’s a huge bathroom!!).

Thank you Sonia, taken note. Have decided to go ahead with mosaic tiles. They are a piece of art, so beautiful and remind me of waterfalls and beach, shimmering seas . Brings life to grey bathroom or any bathroom.
