Eggshell or satin paint for dark-coloured windows and doors?

The rooms in our new house are each being painted a different light shade of emulsion paint (think Farrow & Ball Mizzle, Old White and Cromarty). We’re going to go with a very dark shade (think Farrow & Ball Railings) for all the doors and windows.

Is it better to do the doors and windows in satin or eggshell finish? I’m thinking satin because they will be such a dark colour that it is probably a good idea that they bounce a bit of light around, but I do wonder if satin will be too shiny? Appreciate any advice thanks!

I've not used eggshell paint, but I think satin would be more durable. I use satinwood paint which has a low sheen unlike gloss paint.

They are very similar and I’ve used both, but I agree satinwood (Dulux one) is perhaps harder wearing with a mid sheen. Much nicer than gloss.

Hi Nell51. I have done lots of painting recently and have used both oil based and water based paints. We live in a house with lots of conker coloured varnish and I too prepped it with Zinsser Bin. I then used Rustins water based undercoat to further obliterate the dark wood. The oil based paint I would highly recommend is Little Green. I have never used such good quality paint before and there is a great choice of colours (we opted for Portland Stone pale eggshell). I have also used Farrow and Ball eggshell (Shadow White) which is water based and therefore shouldn't yellow. However I discovered a whole new vocabulary of expletives whilst doing this as it was like painting with PVA glue. Even though I used the right brush and have a lot of experience of painting I found it awful to use. I then discovered a product called Owatrol which is a waterborne paint conditioner. You add it to the F&B paint and it increases flow and becomes more like an oil based paint. It is the best product I have ever discovered and worth every penny. My language has improved too. A tricky one as lots of bits to consider, window colour against roof, the weatherboard etc. One thing I decided ( personal preference ), was that everything had to be the one colour. So, the garage, the weatherboard, the door on the right, the walls etc. Making everything one colour gave it both cohesion and presence. It makes it seamless and larger looking. I have to say, I though I would like grey and didn't:- I did like white:- I swayed between white and Sandstone. I think if it were me i'd go for Sandstone, because the white was a little harsh, although I did really like it. So it's a tuffy.

I would paint the skirting boards in pointing to make the ceilings look higher (perhaps the coving too). Why not use a complimentary paint for the doors, maybe something Oxford stone (will appear a bit lighter on wood). I actually quite like the conservatory but you could pick another colour for the stairs? I would just say if you’ve done the whole house in pointing make sure you’re 100% happy as it’s a lot easier to change walls than wood!

I see a lilac picnic bench there, so how about a similar colour. I painted my pergola purple to add colour to my garden. I also have purple, blue, white and yellow flowering shrubs.

last year
this was true with oil based paints that Dulux satin wood was hard wearing, with acrylic paints you need to do litlle bit of a resarch to find acrylic satin that is also durable. I will always stand for F&B egshell or satin for woodwork is a great choice, but if you looking for something little bit more advance there is a choice.
