Kitchen glass splash back vs. tiles & colour?

Hi!

Our kitchen refurb starts in 3 weeks and I still can’t decide on a splash back solution - help!!
Cabinets will be a white matt slab and we won’t have any wall units apart from the tower with the ovens (see picture).
Worktop will be quartz Talia Grey - pale grey with white ‘marble’ thread. We will have an upstand.

Flooring will be Karndean herringbone in mountain oak.

We are removing a wall so we will have an open plan layout - the rest of the downstairs has white walls and we tend to add colour using pictures etc. although I was brave and chose a green emerald sofa for the small lounge which will be opposite the breakfast bar.

My original plan for a scheme was to use white tiles as the splash back and add black/brass accents elsewhere (pendant lighting and tap etc) however my husband thinks this will be too bland/washed out!!

I wasn’t planning on using a dark colour on the kitchen walls as we have a large bulkhead which I don’t want to draw attention to.

I’m stuck!!

Thinking now to go with a glass splashback part way up the wall behind the hob and then the upstand will suffice behind the sink under the window. But…what colour to choose - I don’t want anything too bold and it needs to work with the rest of the space??

I have attached the CAD design and some photos of our current decor.

Advice much appreciated please!!!

My personal view is that tiles in a kitchen are a harbour for dirt and a pain to keep clean. Smooth, sleek surfaces are best. We went for granite upstands to match the worktop and a contrasting but neutral glass splashback.

If you plan to have a glass splashback then the supplier should be able to spray it to any BS or RAL colour of your choice so that gives you 1000s of options.

However, l am in agreement with your husband that if you don’t have a contrast it could well look too bland. I would not be adding white tiles.

The emerald green sofa sounds an excellent choice.

Glass splash backs are very easy to clean and maintain, no grout lines, not damaged by water at all. You do need to plan socket positions and can reduce costs by mounting sockets on undersides of wall cabinets, on the ends of unit runs etc. The glass can be cut around sockets, however. Any mirror or glazing company can do it, you can just buy plain tempered glass and paint the back of it to the colour you want before sticking it to the wall with silicone. Bear in mind the colour will look a bit different through the glass. I had Georgian wired glass back painted to make it look duck egg years ago. It had a slight texture and shimmer, made it look like tiny mosaic tiles but so much easier to clean.

You could have a glass splashback as opposed to tiles. Far easier to keep clean. You could have a plain clear one, a sprayed one to your own colour choice if you offer the supplier a BS or RAL code or even look online for a more decorative one. You must take into account that a glass splashback is very cold. A total opposite to brass os to your sofá. If you go for white tiles, you can play with its shape (hexagonal, shell, …), distribution (herringbone, …), grout colour and texture. I would go for white and would think about adding colour by painting a wall. You can also use special paint (magnetic or blackboard)

My friend had her up-stand (behind hob) in the same material as the worktop and then a low up-stand along the rest. She also had the up-stand up and over her windowsill (as Joyce has done) and it gives a very neat finish. If you are going to have a low up-stand, it doesn’t need a glass splashback or tiles as it can look a little clunky. Paint the wall with kitchen paint which can be scrubbed. Don’t forget you can add warmth and colour with a window blind and accessories.

If you had the white tiles, you can add a colour with matching toaster, kettle, storage jars etc. Match them to your taps if your going brass or black, I think it would look quite striking.

Thanks for your thoughts - so useful as always! The debate rages on here - think we have settled on tiles as it’s a relatively small area and we’re not sure about choosing a paint colour which will work with the rest of the space so will keep it white.

Thinking of these tiles to add colour and interest but not 100% sure yet!

Look at white Zelig tiles with a Pearl finish. Sooo beautiful. Mind you the price is eye-watering!
