Wow what a beautiful house !! That red carpet is soaking up all the light, once that's gone it will make a huge difference. Maybe then paint the stairs white or an old white, or a light coloured carpet. I would keep the Lincrusta, unless you dislike it, it adds period drama and texture, and again paint it off white. Wickes have a surprisingly interesting range of colours too, cheaper than F&B. The curtain probably stops a draught, I would get a huge white vintage French linen sheet, £60ish on eBay, and possibly line and interline it. After all that if it still seems dark, you may consider painting the wood panelling, shame but it could look great ! Also paint the lower banisters the same as the rest !

There are two ways of doing that now. The new trendy way is to paint all the doors and architrave, bannisters etc in your contrast colour ie the beautiful slate blue You could use one shade lighter or one shade darker on the woodwork. Or you could keep all woodwork in white / ivory and keep your darker shade for the walls. Either way, Victorians were all about the dramatic and they loved their dark colours! You've also got a fabulous slate grey in there, so you could go with that too. F&B railings is exceptionally popular at present !With either of the colour schemes above, paint that lovely little cupboard in Mustard for a fabulous contrast !

For some reason I had missed your update photos Angela. Your hall looks fantastic and the stained glass door is the icing on the cake! Bet it looks great form the inside as well... hint... :)

As Sonia said - there is a huge array of Victorian tiles! I can highly recommend a company in Derby called Alternative Tiles (they work nationally too) - they specialise in Victorian tiles. When I had my small porch done, I gave them my measurements and they asked what kind of colours I liked. They then did a few different designs for me on their computer. The tiles that you posted from Topps are nice - but because they are essentially normal tiles, they don’t give you much variety or many options. If you go for a more authentic version such as the ones that Sonia has shared or the type that I described, you will get a truly bespoke end product. Be warned though - it’s not cheap because you need a specialist to lay them! We joke that our (tiny) porch is the most expensive square metre in our entire house. The tiles used in the more authentic versions are usually from a company called Original Style. I’ve hopefully linked their Victorian brochure. https://www.originalstyle.com/media/106774/original-style_vft_june-2019.pdf
