I think a 1300 tub is only any good if you want to bath toddlers so given the two choices I would choose one bathroom.

I offer a third option

To be honest, I think you only have space for one bathroom and it would be much nicer to have a lovely spacious bedroom and a large bathroom than compromise on both. I also think that the only right place for your bed is facing looking out of the window. Having the door opening onto the side of the bed doesn’t really work.

If you only have visitors from time to time, it’s better to make your own space more comfortable and attractive and then accept you have to share when people do come to stay.

I'd make one big bathroom but have a door into it from your bedroom as well as from the hall - so it's an ensuite most of the time, but guest access from hall when necessary. Agree with above to make a lovely bedroom and bathroom for yourselves and share with guests - who will also appreciate a lovely bathroom rather than a small internal one. And from your two-bath solution - the main reason for me to want an ensuite is to have easy access to the toilet from bedroom during the night, so having the toilet separate from both bathrooms (and especially far from the ensuite) makes no sense to me at all. While Jonathan's idea works better if you want two smaller bathrooms, I'd rather have one big bathroom and no ensuite than a tiny ensuite.

Thank you all, thats very helpful and I like the idea of being able to walk through the bedroom and the corridor. The issue we’ve got with the larger bathroom is that:

1) the bedroom is awkwardly tight with limited space to walk to the wardrobe and barely any space to actually open the wardrobe with a bedside table.

2) we can’t fit a shower and a bathtub without ending up with another tight bathroom.

3) we want to keep the toilet separate as it creates a more continous layout, better ventilation across the house from one end to the other hand via a straight corridor and also in france we very often have our toilets separate from the bathroom haha.

I would welcome your thoughts on 1) and 2) though :)

1/ the bathroom options you have given have exactly the same size of bedroom, just different doorways. given the other points you make though, it seems like the bedroom layout in your 2-bath option would work better for you than the first?

2/ merge both the bathrooms as shown in your 2-bathroom option and you have space for bath, shower and sink/s. just have access from the hallway - directly opposite the access into the separate toilet room.

3/ keep the toilet separate as shown in your 2-bathroom option - i like the fact that this provides a view all the way through the house, etc. and i have no issue with toilet being separate from bathroom, as long as they are close enough to each other.

If you don’t want to climb into the bath to shower you could try a walk-in bath instead. These have a door which allows one to walk into the shower as if it were a shower cubicle, but there’s the option to close it off for bathing. Smaller footprint than having both and there are some stylish options out there.
