Loft Conversion Bedroom

Hello, I was wondering if anyone would like to help with a bit of interior design...? We are getting close to completing on a property where the master bedroom is a recently completed loft conversion with ensuite. The house is a period property with lots of original features but as with most conversions and extensions, this room lacks any personality/character and is presently a blank canvas.

The furniture we currently have will be coming with us so I need to work around that. I will post pics of the room as it is now, and pics of our furniture coming with us.

Despite the grey bed, I am not an all over grey fan. I don't mind it as a base and to incorporate a pop of colour - just not allllll grey and no diamanté or glitter. We will be utilising one of the spare bedrooms as a dressing room and I am undecided yet if I want my dressing table and blush chair to be in my bedroom or the dressing room. Probably the bedroom as the dressing room will be on another floor.
I am quite traditional and love a bit of olde worlde cosy cottage, victorian/edw

ardian vibe but I am 100% open to new ideas.

Hi Jess,

Blending the traditional with a fresh twist could really elevate the space. Considering the room’s neutral palette and your preference for avoiding an all-grey scheme, why not introduce soft pastel or jewel tones through textiles and accents? Incorporating your blush chair and dressing table adds a personal touch and aligns with the Victorian/Edwardian cosy theme.

You could also layer in rich textures like velvet or wool to bring warmth and depth, and consider classic wall panelling or floral motifs to tie in those period details you love.

I think a lovely wallpaper on the back wall with a hint of pink would look lovely. Then paint the rest of the walls to tie in with it if necessary. Grey is a good neutral and can certainly be pepped up with a bit of colour, whether it’s pink, yellow or green. Or maybe panel that back wall which will certainly add some character.

You could consider a concept planner for this. You would get to explore more than one option before committing. Consider OnePlan. Personally I think that you need to consider several factors: what you need from the house; who is the likely next occupants (professional house sharers and families have different requirements); how much reception space you have and if you need more; if 4 bedrooms are better than 5; what outside space you have and if a roof terrace is needed.

I suggest having a look at floor plans on Rightmove-if you go to house prices (ie sold rather than for sale) for roads with similar houses you can see how lots of others have reconfigured the same house. We’ve been looking at terraces with our daughter and got to know the main Manchester terrace formats- I think many with similar to your format have the stairs going to a landing with bathroom and very small 3rd bed off, then stairs continue to the other two bedrooms. As regards resale, we saw one which had dropped the 3rd bed to get a larger bathroom, but it was £25k down on the 3bed houses! I don’t think the en suite adds value, unless it is part of a good quality loft conversion- bedroom space is more valuable with this size of house. I’d definitely try to get the bathroom upstairs. If this is a home you plan to sell in the medium term, you can gauge the value of the loft conversion from the Rightmove sold prices-where we’re looking a really good one can add a significant amount to the value.

Agreed -talk to them - take your time - builders are stacked out with work currently - so in reality you are unlikely to get something done this side of Autumn anyway. Is it the exterior design you dislike or the interior ? We often work on interior reconfigures for projects ( upstairs and downstairs!) but like everyone else in the industry - are booked up a couple of months ahead at the moment.

If your clothes are going to be downstairs then consider if this is the best bedroom for you- would this be better as a guest room?

If you are decorating this room consider adding in some or the things you find in the rest of the house- for instance coving and fireplaces aren’t going to work but you could add wall panelling and a dado rail, a deep skirting board and add architrave around the window.

Hi Jess! You've got a lovely open-space bedroom that has some much potential. We think adding a feature wall behind the bed will give the room a pop of colour and create a beautiful focal point.

Depending if you're keeping with the traditional neutral colours you can choose a mural that has light textured tones or if you want a more vibrant interior design we think a bold mural will go perfectly here.
