Kitchen/dining/living space

I am planning to remodel this space as part of our ongoing refurbishment. I am finding it difficult to settle on an openplan design (preferably with sliding doors to kitchen diner) that comfortably incorporates kitchen, dining and living with a woodburner, TV, sofa and 2 armchairs. Any ideas much appreciated. (Kitchen area approx 5m x 3m, living 6m x 4m)

I would think about running your built-ins from the back door across and around the corner and all the way down that right-side wall. Put the fridge almost at the end of that run, with a tall cabinet last (behind current door-swing). Keep the sink centered as much as possible on the window, put the DW to the left of the sink and put the range on the interior wall along run to fridge. Take out most of wall from current doorway, or just make the doorway double the current width. Leave the short wall that turns the corner and that will create space for the cabinet and fridge. Then you seem to have room for eating area at left end. Leaving some of the wall at that end will create a nice nook for the eating area. Then you have a nook for the wood stove on the other side of that wall. Best to you.

You will be sacrificing cabinet / counter space for large sliding doors.

It could be an idea to demarcate the kitchen using the floor, rather than by using furniture - the easiest and cheapest way would be a rug of suitable material. If the area is demarcated there isn't as pressing a need to put something there, like an island or table. It also preserves the sense of open space - you said the room was small overall, so it's important not to crowd it with furniture. Then the furniture you do have can be spaced out, so you can have a larger sitting area. A round table would be good in the corner by the door. Round because as Minnie said it takes less space. A glass table would be best as it is see-through and preserves a sense of space. Round is also good because it adds softness - the rest of the room is going to have square or rectangular lines to it. The dining table could also be the desk. An alternative would be a coffee table in the sitting area that converts into a desk - if you google "coffee table and desk" you will see some really cool examples. I don't know how to copy and post the images, so you will have to search it, sorry! Corner TV - I have the same problem. I'm considering a wall mount. This saves space, but you do have to consider the wiring, and where to put digital boxes etc. Good luck!! Show us some after pics?

If you have a good lighting shop you could draw up a plan and take it to the shop for advice. Check out this article about kitchen lighting. I followed this advice and it gave me a completey different lighting plan that I would not have planned. I actually have light where I need it and not because it's part of a grid on the ceiling. Even the adviser at my local electrical shop liked it and advised me to remove 2 of the ceiling lights - I think my double spots are spaced 1.4m apart. You also need to think about task lighting for areas where you will be working and need sharper/brighter lighting. All of the info is in the link below. I have a probably unpopular suggestion... unless you're happy with an end design.. could you either do it in stages (I appreciate living in a building site is Never ideal) So knock out the chimneys and open up the space, but not pull out the kitchen etc. Give you a bit of time to see the space and be able to move your sofa/dining table around to try and work out what would work best in reality? Or postpone the project slightly to give yourselves the time to finalise a layout you're truly happy with +/- using OnePlan? I agree tho, realistically with that layout its stools or the sofa! Also I wondered whether the outside store space off the lean to, could be made accessible from the hallway? And then could that be the utility cupboard? Then you could use that bottom bit in your kitchen for tall units/larder cupboard/pantry/FF etc

Hi Jennifer The plan hasn't attached - could you please possibly upload this again in the comment section so I can take a look for you? :) I have two little boys so I can fully understand the play area section - my two have always followed me around so anywhere and everywhere becomes a play area! It is very hard to contain toddlers to be creative in just one area so I can only imagine making sure the open plan space is family friendly as well as useable for everyone is without a doubt a high priority.
