Window dressings - Blind or curtains?! Or both?

Our bed faces this window. There are now two small rads under each window. We used to have long, thick curtains over the entire area but they took up loads of space and looked very heavy. I'm now doing tongue and groove on the wall opposite this image (behind the bed) so I'm concerned that white wooden shutters may not feel cosy and it might feel like a wooden box! I'm going for a 'modern beach house' vibe (although, yes, it is urban!) so I think something in blues/greys/whites...Would it look weird to have short roman blinds on each window and curtains in the same fabric in the middle?? Should I use a long roman blind over the doors?? ANy ideas GREATLY APPRECIATED!

For me I think shutters would look lovely. Not cold at all. It will run with your beach house theme and they could be pulled back against the walls when not required. I’m not sure of the configuration though, but perhaps tall ones across the lot? Roman blinds are usually used on short windows rather than curtains. I think they’d look odd in front of the doors.

Linen roman blinds mounted well above the window so that they fold right up without blocking any light. Blackout lining to keep out light and heat in summer. I would also choose a neutral colour so as not to compete with anything else. I would do roman blinds for all of it and skip the curtains completely. Sounds lovely, your modern beach house idea.

You maybe surprised that shutters are not as expensive as some perceive. Shutters be purchased on line where you are required to measure and install yourself. Shutters can be very unforgiving if measured incorrectly. Need any advise? Just ask London Interior Shutters, happy to advise.

Hi Nikki, we went with Thomas Sanderson blinds and originally went with the manual version but they didnt work very well so they upgraded our blinds for free to the battery operated version and they are great. Not 'blackout' as advertised but still pretty good. We paid around £4000 I think but if we were to have paid for the battery blinds it would have been £7500. Wish there was a better option but they seemed to be our only choice that would ensure our view was unobstructed and the room was dark. Hope that helps!

That many blinds would be a pain to open and close on a daily basis. You'd likely end up leaving some of them closed permanently which would cut the light enormously. Consider curtains that hang from the flat wall above the archway, in front of the whole bay window. When open they could hang on either side of the opening, meaning no loss of light. It would definitely make the room smaller when closed but would be a lovely 'wall of fabric', closing off any clutter on your dressing table.

I had one of these and instead used a circular deep cushion to block out the light with jet engine image printed on the fabric (my son was a plane freak)

I would do both. curtains, plus roman blinds over the windows,

Roman blinds over the doors would look weird, and not sure how practical would that be.

If you mounted them so that they clear the window completely then the windows are uncovered most of the time. You only need to use them when you need them. This way you will get maximum light.

I’m not sure how you could fit curtains over the doors with Roman blinds on the windows. Where would the curtains stack back when open?

It might be my eyesight but looking at the windows is anything fitted inside of the recess out of the question? If so i would just add natural linen curtains with a blackout lining. Hopefully linen is much lighter than the fabric you had before and have them just hover slightly above the floor so they don’t encroach on the floor space. That’s assuming you have room to stack them as can’t tell from the pic, just make sure the pole/brackets you use will project over the sills

We had a similar setup in our current house before we renovated and had a curtain the full width of the windows and doors. Worked just fine and if you hang high and wide, when open they do not impact the light or view.

Hi Bev, what about white venetian blinds, and a long faux curtain each side, material keeping your beach theme, which would soften the look and still leave the radiators clear of any obstruction.
