window railings

I have a dilemma that I do hope the Houzzing community can help with. My house dits directly onto a pavement - there is no front garden. There is a bus stop directly outside which my local council refuse to move. When we moved into the house there were metal railings on the window but they were at a hight that people could sit on them easily while waiting for a bus. Inevitably the railings were pulled out of the wall. People now sit directly on my window ledge and cause damage with their feet on the paintwork and scratch the glass with the inevitable backpacks!
I wondered if anyone could think of a solution. I thought of higher railings so that people could not sit on them. My windows would still have to be able to be cleaned and would railings be illegal anyway re fire regulations. I cannot put window boxes as I know these would be destroyed over time.
Any solution would be much appreciated.

It might be but i don’t understand how window boxes would be destroyed as it would be extremely uncomfortable to try and sit on one? I don’t know how high the ledge is but i’m sure you must be able to get tallish boxes or use tall’ish plants but sparingly so as not to block all the light

Thanks Minnie. The house nearly opposite tried window boxes and the plants were ripped out - they hardly lasted a week! i know you and i would never dream of doing such a thing - but lots of people do i am afraid. i would love window boxes overflowing with colourful plants but dont think this is viable in my situation.

Hi! My husband fitted the bay window rail himself... We made it with copper pipe, the type you use for plumbing. One long length bended in the corners. A little industrial... I love the colour!! The fittings are cheap from Ikea spray painted copper. Just need to make/ find finials now!

What about attaching bird spikes to the sill? The sort of thing used to deter pigeons on buildings. No idea how to fix them but there must be a way! Yes don’t block windows with railings as you need as many fire escape areas as possible, just in case.

On god really?! I sympathise, it was somebody famous funeral here a few years ago and all of our window ledges were so packed with people sitting, I’m surprised they didn’t fall off! Other than that it’s just on occasion and I either glare or knock on the window!

Do you have a picture of the window? One of the taller curved ones may work, I guess you’d need planning but it depends how the window opens and the style of house

Have you tried a polite notice pointing out that it is private propery and not bus stop seating? You need to make it uncomfortable for them to sit there. Some uninviting slippery surface or an obstruction in front? Totally agree with glaring and knocking on the window. A big private property no sitting in the window might work. It would drive me insane. I really would consider a barrier like railings. Are they sash windows and it might be possible to lean over the railings to clean them?

Could you add a low decorative rail on your window sill just high enough to stop people ‘perching’ or putting bags down? It wouldn’t stop you getting out in an emergency, it would also be on your property be it only by a few inches so the council couldn’t complain provided it doesn’t bulge out.

All of the above comments are so kind and helpful. The problem with a low metal bar is people will sit on it. We had these before fitted to the 2 downstairs windows but people sat on them so often they eventually were pulled out of the wall. I cant put anything in front on the window to deter as it is straight onto the pavement. I think it will have to be something like Minnie suggested but not sticking out to cause obstruction but tall enough to deter sitting. Our windows are casement so we could climb out in an emergency if needs be. I will probably have to visit a blacksmith to get his take on what might be possible.

I am afraid not - my house is directly onto the pavement at the front so no room to put anything in front of windows unfortunately.
