Cheaper alternative to Internorm or Velfac windows/doors

We have been looking at Internorm and Velfac windows as part of a wider house refurb, however we understand that we could achieve similar levels of energy efficiency with an alternative and potentially cheaper product. Does anybody have any experience of discouting an Internorm/Velfac type product and using an alternative? What's the next best, less expensive product available? Were you happy with the results?

Internorm and Velfac are great but you can find windows that are just as energy-efficient without the price tag. Glass-type, how they seal, and their energy ratings all have an impact - I would shop around first before making any decisions.

Agree with the above comment. Internorm are a very high quality product. Make a list of all the things you require from your windows before doing a comparison and read the reviews very carefully. Check things like guarantee periods, exclusions, etc. before buying. The old adage buy cheap buy twice is something to be aware of. Some items are more expensive for a reason. If I was looking to make significant savings I would try to find returns or overruns of a quality product which may have been returned due to being measured incorrectly or something similar.

Wow some great ideas. It's such a lovely feature that I am willing to spend a bit of money to keep the shape of the window. I'll have a look into all the suggestions and report back. Have you thought about aluclad windows? I didnt know anything about them until I started looking into them. I dont want UPVC. Aluminium is too expensive so we are going with aluclad. Aluminium on the outside, painted softwood inside. Can have varnished softwood inside if preferred. I have chosen Rational windows because they do a true flush casement, traditional style window profile which suits our house. They also do a contemporary profile. Other companies to consider are Ideal Combi, Nordan, Internorm and Velfac. Price wise, quotes came in cheaper than the most expensive UPVC windows eg. Residence 7. They were also cheaper than aluminium windows.

Also had similar issues. To my mind anthracite or black windows can look good IF they are done well - they look good when they are good quality windows with modern flat profiles, fitted to a house which has had proper architectural consideration. The problem now is that all the cheaper upvc double glazing companies are doing them with thick frames and chamfered profiles, and they can look clunky and old fashioned rather than sleek and considered. Our sliding doors only came in 4 colour choices, so in the end we have gone for RAL7021 (a soft black) for those - on the modern rear extension - with RAL7006 (beige grey) aluminium composite windows elsewhere on our 1930s house. The sliding doors are in and the 7021 does look really good, almost invisible as the frames are very slim, and I think it works because it's the very modern extension. The windows aren't in yet so I can't comment on how it's all going to work together. I am keeping my fingers crossed...! Our windows will be Velfac which are alu outside, painted timber inside and you can choose different colours for interior/exterior. They weren't as expensive as I thought they were going to be, so it's worth getting a quote for aluminium composite windows before you decide.

Velfac are good but keep an eye on accuracy of the quote - go over every detail with a fine tooth comb. The product is excellent though. You could also look at internorm, ideal combi and smart windows. It really depends on whether you want composite or all aluminium etc. try to visit showrooms or friends homes who have installed different systems - we found this helped hugely as it’s hard to visualise the differences between the different brands. Also look at glazing vision for your rooflights.
