Windows Design Dilemma

1 window 2 sets of doors, curtains?

I have these three windows, I have made pelmets for 2 of them but the 3 rd doors open inwards, my question is would the room look too fussy with 3 lots of curtains,

Do you need to cover all of them? Is it for privacy? I think it depends on what type of curtains you use. If they are thin sheers then it wouldn't look busy but if they are quite thick and lined then its a lot of fabric plus a big stack either side. Would you consider simple blinds instead? Or choose 1 of the 3 to make more of a statement and keep the other two simple.

Thankyou it’s not for privacy and I have just bought the blinds, I just feel as though it’s missing something

I have to say, I'm leaning towards option 1. As I may have mentioned in the past, I suspect the trend for grey and anthracite windows/doors/sofitts etc will end sooner or later and what folks will find is they're left with external features that date a house but would be expensive to fix. And whilst I like the look of the grey now, I also remember liking the dark wood windows in the late 80s at the time, but now think they date a property. :-/ (sorry to offend anyone who may have them).

Hi there I am looking for some help with the set up of doors and windows for the opening on our second story extension. I was originally going to put in the accordion style doors so the whole wall can open up to outside but I have been put off because of all of the ‘frames’ required. The opening for the main balcony is 4.7metres (width) by 2.1 metres (height) The other opening (not pictured) is 5.6 metres wide. This leads out to a thin balcony which will hav no furniture and joins to the main one where I will put some seating. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what combination of doors and windows would work best? Thank you for your help

Hi Jack, You said you want curtains and also wanted a really neat and balanced solution. The problem with curtains is that they will always have to be pushed to the side to get in and out of inward-opening doors. As there is some space between the top of the doors and the ceiling, yes, another option is blinds. When these are closed they will nestle in that space above the doors, you won't need curtain poles, and there are several different types of blinds that can be compressed tight into that space. Yes, velvet curtains soften a room, however, as blinds come in so many different colours and patterns these days, the right choice could also do that. And you could still have your preference of “dark green / teal." In the two bedrooms, blinds with a blackout fabric would block the unwanted light you mentioned. Furthermore, if they were remote-controlled they could be operated from bed, or even have timers so they opened and closed automatically at set times of the day and night. In the end it’s such a personal decision – some people love curtains and others love blinds. Hope that helps. Joy

Thanks Zoe, I agree with you re toilet being more of a priority. The amount of squabbles that would save... It feels a little backwards to most other properties that have a toilet downstairs and the full bathroom upstairs but I can’t see another way to do it and get 3 double bedrooms upstairs. At the moment my twins have L shaped bunks but in 7 years they’ll probably be over 6’ tall so I want to have enough space for 2 singles too. 🤔 With your other idea I could move the wall over another 10cm but it would be right up against the window frame, would that look ok?

I agree, I don't think that curtains are necessary. With some artwork or some brighter accent cushions on the sofa to include the colours you have around the rest of the room (neutrals) I think you'll find just what you are missing

I agree with Black and Milk, some brighter or lighter cushions on the sofa would look great. Perhaps a wooden tray (and accessories) on the footstool?

I'd remove the pelmets and lower that mirror a bit (as it looks like you were trying to line it up).

If the blinds are to block some sunlight and you'd like to cover all glass, use inbetweens and make sure the rail/rod extends the openings with at least 15cms.
