Hallway Design Ideas Required PLEASE

Recently painted the walls etc.... wanted to add a really nice touch to the small hallway and landing upstairs.
I just don't know where to start, i have 4 children, youngest is 8. So needs to be somewhat child friendly.
I do know I need a mirror and console somewhere. Not looking to do any building work etc, so need to work with the space I have.

The shelf and mirror will look great. A mudroom configuration would work brilliantly under the stairs for kids coats, shoes and bags.

Do you have any storage for coats, shoes/boots etc? I think you should consider a long shelf with a hanging rack if you don't already have one? What is the length of the space to the left of the stairs as you go up? The problem with placing a small console there is that it will block stair access. I would place a long shelf over the rad to act as a console. A mirror above it would finish it off nicely and maybe a portable lamp if you do not have a socket there.

Thank you @Isla Cherry. Yes we have some storage in the porch and we have a room in the kitchen that we're using as a coat and shoe place (until we knock it all out and square out the kitchen). Under the stairs is empty, but we may need that space to get into garage/possible toilet.

I always think that a hall with a seating area is just bliss for sitting down while pulling on your boots or flicking through a magazine or two! I would shelve the entire area that is before the post and have a built in seat with more storage above and below it to make life even more clutter free. Good luck hope it works out for you.

What a beautiful space! We find that customers love free-length tiles in older properties, as the layout lends itself to the rustic feel. Free-length is where the widths of the tiles are the same but the lengths vary, so you get that traditional farmhouse look. Another popular choice is the opus pattern, which is a repeating pattern across this floor. Again it gives a really rustic finish. I have a hall way very similar to yours, when we moved in it was painted white. I presume the previous owner wanted to improve light levels. It had the reverse effect! It made the space seem gloomier which may be related to the front of the house being north facing, what direction does your house face as this may influence paint choices. I love colour but go neutral in a space like a hall way as it links all the rooms in the house and in Victorian houses is very difficult to decorate, ceiling heights etc. We used Farrow and Balls London stone as it remained a true neutral,,many other beige/greige had pink/ purple tones which showed in artificial light. I agree with the other comments about stripping the doors particularly if you do decide on white, it will provide contrast and warmth. You could paint a darker colour beneath the dado rail. I would suggest careful placement of mirrors to maximise/ steal light from other rooms. Also pictures with glass bring light to the area too. You could mount pictures on the stair case in line with the treads. I agree with the earlier comment about mounts and frames. I would go for a runner to show off your lovely stair case. Does the door to your kitchen/diner have a glass panel (s) in it, if not I would suggest adding one or two depending on the type of original door you have that will pull light in from that room. Good lighting will help too, it all depends on your personal preference, you could have pendants downstairs and spotlights upstairs. Good luck with it and hope you enjoy the process

Great,you have more space than I thought. I would place the console if you could find one long enough to fit over the rad or a shelf if you can't and a mirror. Opposite could be a striking artwork or black and white gallery that would not restrict access. In fact consider taking a photo gallery up the wall above the stairs. It looks very bright and fresh and I love the stained glass.

I'm just hoping, the console/shelf over the rad won't be in the way, as you've seen the children's bags thrown under the stairs you can only imagine the way they stampede in 🙈.

My thoughts were to get a slim/narrow console (seen one at 63cm wide just before the stairs) then a long mirror between the rad and door frame.....

Where do the children normally store their bags when they come home? Is there room in the porch area? If not I would consider some sort of cubbie shelving under the stairs. An ikea kallax unit is fine. It would clear the trip hazards for now. The only reason I suggest the console/shelf on the other side was because the stair access is quite tight.

I have space for their bags etc, in the same place their coats jackets and shoes go. Ample space in there.

But after thinking about it, I think you're right about the shelf/console over the Rad.

But I also have this space behind the door too.

Sorry, 🙈 just lots of thoughts running through my mind. Want to make the most of the space without over crowding or making a mistake.

I was also thinking a shelf over the radiator like Isla but how close to the architrave is the radiator? Ideally the shelf will be a little longer than the radiator (pics with same length and longer)

I agree, a small console on the entrance with a mirror above would be quite inviting when walking into the space. Use small baskets underneath as storage & add some family photos to make it feel more homely.

I think Isla’s idea is your best bet. Having a console and mirror behind the door isn’t very accessible but a smart shelf above the radiator is.

Minnie and Sonia's examples illustrate perfectly what I was thinking. You could run the shelf right up to the door return if you wanted to. I also think portable lamps if you don't have a socket that side would provide subtle lighting. Now you have some great styling ideas too.

If you like an uncluttered look, I'd probably do some goodlooking storage under the stairs. Don't feel like you need to use every space, plants are nice (eg behind the lobby door). Artwork on the walls. Hanging a cool throw is a good way of incoroporating large textural art.. Let me know if you need more help/ideas!
