Kitchen layout - help I'm panicking a bit!

Im starting to panic about the layout of my kitchen... Im hoping you will reassure me as all the electrics are in and I cant make too many changes.

Currently I have about a 120cm gap between the sink run and the island and the hob will be in the island. The fridge which is an american fridge will be on the run on the opposite wall to the sink and there will be a walk way to the left of the island between the fridge and the island.

There will also be a 120cm gap approx between the oven run and the island.

The gap between the wall and the island will be approx 90cm and will be just a place for one person to stand and cook - not for people to move behind.

The floor space infront of the kitchen will have to fit a table and chairs and a small sofa and I don't want it to feel cramped.

My concerns are:

1. should I move the dishwasher to the left of the sink - its currently to the right. Im wondering if unloading the dishwasher willl be easier with easier access to the cupboards where the stuff is going to be - on the flip side i think loading it might be easier where it currently is as there will be more space infront of it and it will be closer to the table where the dishes will be mostly coming from.

2. Should I move the island closer to the sink run? So that I can reach the island more easily from the sink and also to create more space for the walk way infront of the fridge? I want the room to feel spacious and I think that 120cm of space between the island and the worktops is taking away space from the resto of the room.

Dishwasher is the blue, fridge is in green and the oven is in yellow. The hob is in the island

I wouldn't change the dishwasher position. It doesn't make enough of a difference at this stage. Was the plan to have the island centred about the two side runs? Is the idea to have stools on the island end closest to the fridge? If this is the plan then you need as much space as possible so that you can access the fridge while someone is seated at the island. Moving the island closer to the sink run will make it more obvious that it isn't central to the space which it does not appear to be anyway. I think another 100mm or so towards the sink would be a good idea. How much clearance do you have between the fridge and the island? I don't see the oven on the rendering just a windowseat?? and do not understand the wall protruding into the space in a U-shape?

Thank-you very much for the comments. I hope it will be a great space, but playing around with it and changing the design at the last minute is getting a bit stressful! This is the design that the build company showed us initially - just their initial thought as it how it would look. I found feeling the area where they had positioned the fridge/freezer very tricky. We want a free-standing french larder style fridge and the doors and level of matching with the rest of the units didn't seem like a good fit. The support pillar for the steel that crosses the island in the attachment below has also been a real annoyance. It sticks out 23cm, so it can only really go through empty-ish cupboards. Clearly anything to the left of that steel is difficult to vent. On the design in my intitial post, I was intending to have a dropped ceiling element that stretched just beyond the steel. This would let me have a powerful extractor and exit the flew onto the flat room (hidden by the drop ceiling 'box'). I like the idea you describe of a full wall of units, then island, then table. I guess Jonathan's proposal is similar to that. While I love the efficiency of the "4 double door" hideaway I just don't like the aesthetic, so will need to think about something else. Bringing it back to what we need... Utility room: enough to stash the washing machine, store the vacuum cleaner and hang a few clothes. No need for a sink. Free Standing, 90cm wide fridge, nicely framed either by wall of kitchen units. Waist height oven with an additional "top oven / grill (broiler)" - so at least one full height column. Good size kitchen island with at least two seats. Approx 90cm induction hob, plus a gas domino hob. Powerful, externally venting extractor over hob. I'm relatively open to moving the kitchen/living area to wherever it works best. I'm also not desperate to have the hob on the island (but that would be nice). As far as I know, the builders haven't done anything that can't be easily adjusted at this stage - but I think that will change in a couple of days - and they are planning for the kitchen to be in the old part of the house. As for rooflights - I thought, perhaps wrongly, that it would be light enough with the big bifold doors. It is an east facing room, and the old room had some sliding paitio doors and it felt bright enough. So I have left roof lights out on the basis that - but I'm also concerned about noise. (Cheaper too!). The biggest window we can gave without incurring significantly more cost is 1800mm x 1000mm - I'm minded to be 2 or 3 of these in that middle section. Thanks!

Peninsulas so often cut a space up. You have a few options to play with as your room is a lovely size and shape. The island design should work nicely if you have 2.7 into the window as this gives you the important 1m walkway. To make a bigger island without interrupting the walkway from the door, have you considered a circular island perhaps? My personal choice would be to have a large L shaped kitchen with a new, large kitchen table in the middle where everyone can work, play and cook on all at once making it a really sociable space to enjoy. To create a spacious kitchen, you need to leave space and so this would really show off the size of the room whilst providing a huge piece of personality in the centre. We have the exact same layout and decided not to extend the living area. There already was a mudroom/utility extension. We did remove the reception-dining wall and chimneys, removed the kitchen-dining wall. Our fridge freezer and oven are in the mudroom. And I cut a rectangle out of the toilet-kitchen wall to make room for a small toilet washbasin, the hole is patched with plywood and tiled on the kitchen side. The desk is next to the dining table, only need to turn the chair around. NB we do have a small cellar where we store food, oven trays and such.

Looks like everything is really spread around the room - I personally wouldn't like all the extra steps I'd be taking between fridge and sink - assuming you have a hot water tap, just walk through the process of making a cup of tea (assuming milk in fridge) and see how you feel about it. Likewise, making a meal - walk through the steps you'd be taking. I don't mind the oven being the farthest away as it's the appliance that I use least (out of fridge, sink, hob and oven) - and it's usually just sticking something into oven and leaving it for a bit, so best to be out of the general walkway. I'd switch the fridge/freezer with the hob and whatever is beside the hob. Then get a tall pantry beside the hob so that whole wall is still a full-length wall of units (or do side-by-side ovens?)

Could you have drawer units on the right side of the island facing the sink for ease of unloading the dishwasher and utilise one of the cupboards by the sink as space for an undercounter drinks fridge for butter, milk, cream and cheese etc (im assuming drinks and toaster will be on this side of the kitchen).

Personally, I prefer a tight working triangle so would rotate the island off the flat wall….

Thanks everyone for your advice. To clarify the u shaped thing next to the tall oven is a toilet. So that can’t be removed!

I have recently been back to IKEA and saw a different kitchen planner and she is adamant the island should get switched around.

I think I’m going to go for it! What do you think? The only thing is that the fridge will still be far away but I think I can cope with that. In my old house my fridge was in the utility room so even further away!

I may even make the island bigger now as I have plenty of space behind the stools. I think this is much better what do you think?

Hi Rachel, your new layout is very very similar to ours except our fridge is much nearer. The thing that sticks out for me is that those bar stools are too close to the hob. Our peninsula is double depth - so 120cm - and things bubbling on the hob are capable of splashing 30-40cm back with ease! I would never sit anyone behind it. We actually don't have stools as we had to fit our washing machine and tumble drier on dining side but if I were to have stools they would be to the side of the hob only. Do u really need the stools? Your dining table is nice and close and you could have some lovely comfy chairs there for people to perch. If you really want stools then just be careful where you put them. If you did away with them the peninsula could be deeper and you'd have loads of additional storage. It's what works for your lifestyle though :)

Thanks for your reply. I’m really keen to have stools but I plan to have a linear hob (all the rings in a row) and also have the island a bit wider/ I think there’s room to do this now that we have turned the island around.
Do you think I’ll cope with the fridge further away?

Ah OK, that makes sense, I was just going off the picture. Definitely seems you have room to go wider and a linear hob would definitely reduce the splash zone.

Regards the fridge.....depends how organised a cook you are - do you get everything out at once and put away at once? Also, do you like a hot drink with milk - where is your kettle/coffee maker in relation to the fridge?

I try to get everything out but I'm more a diving in the fridge for some mustard or freezer for some herbs kind of cook so like it close. It would drive me nuts going round the peninsula everytime but we are all different and have to work with the space we have

Included a photo of ours (excuse chaos) in case it helps visualise. There is a pantry built in to corner behind fridge. Back wall is 4.2m long and from back to front edge of peninsula is about 3m. I have 1.1m between sink and peninsula and 0.95m between front of fridge and end of peninsula. I cook alone but have enough room for hubby to help me wash and dry and peninsula keeps kids safe the other side.

Thanks your layout is probably better than mine with the fridge like that but I don’t think there’s anywhere else for the fridge to go without losing a lot of worktop space.

Ok one last time! I’m going to order it today I think! Here is the final design. An extra row of 37.5cm cabinets under the island and island worktop width is now increased to 112.5 so stools much further away from hob.

Do the proportions of the peninsula look odd now? Quite short and fat.
It’s 112.5 x 190cm

Since I now have a deeper peninsula should I go back to having a non linear hob to make the most of the worktop space either side of it?
