Carpet colour advice please.

We are searching for carpet for a north-facing sitting room. We found one where the colours suit us but the fabric of the carpet isn't right - it's far too soft/fluffy for our taste but we can't find anything similar so thought I'd ask for your collective wisdom.

We cannot have wool for health reasons.

The carpet where the colour is the best match for our needs so far is Sandstorm by Abingdon carpets in their love collection silk range. It's a flecked carpet, warm creamy beige with some brown & almost ginger flecks which are warming.

At the moment the world seems to be full of grey carpet!

I've tried to photograph the sample but the camera just leaches all the colour. Picture is from internet.

Does anyone have any ideas of brand/colour we could try please.?

Lovely colour but it does have a long pile which will flatten with time. How about trying a Berber style carpet?. They have the flecks you like but a tighter weave which is most attractive. I also find independent carpet shops rather than Carpetright etc seem to have much more selection. If wool is a problem then maybe polypropylene might be a better option, hardwearing too. John Lewis do some very nice carpets too.

Thank you, yes I think polypropylene is the way to go. Berber style would be fine if we didn't have a cat who has no control over her claws!! We may have to try John Lewis though we don't have one near. Sorry to appear negative but I do appreciate your thoughts.

hi all, update is I have finally found a photo of someones stairs done in Brintons timorous beastie yellow Ruskin butterfly and its made me decide we are definitely 100% going for this as I love it (see attached pics) on stairs and landing... Floor in hall will be oak herringbone parquet, just wall colour to decide and we have bought new tall skirting so colour to paint this also? i have attcahed apic of the hall currently so you can see our front door with stain glass.. As Ive mentioned before the banister and spindles will be replaces with square spindles with an oak top banister and oak end cap - similar to this houzz pic ... So just to deicide on wall colour and new skirting colour... I really like f&b light blue in a hall with oak parquet but I don't feel this will go with the carpet... Kitchen and dining room will be one of the sage shades and lounge Wimborne white and downpipe...

We like the idea of striped carpet, but it`s a big risk! we looked at grey but it made the room and sofa feel cold. Is there a warmer alternative to grey?

Your room looks lovely and the wallpaper is soft and pretty, perfect for a bedroom. If the company the paper is from do fabric in the same print that would look great for the windows and would make the scheme cohesive. It wouldn’t be too much as you have only papered one wall. I wouldn’t have short curtains though but roman blinds with thick interlining to make them look luxurious and provide insulation. I wouldn’t use navy at all, I think the green in the paper is a lovely soft colour and would be better for cushions etc. If you can’t get the matching fabric then use that green or the pale blue for the windows. As long as you stick to the shades in the paper it will all come together.

Thank you all for your comments .. You have helped me decide that the stripy carpet does not work , that was my gut feeling all along . Unfortunately I have already ordered it from roger oates so will have to foot a fee to cancel or change for different ! As for the tiled floor I will try and see what best I can do to clean up , we have done it once a few years ago . I want to keep it . Thank you again .

Yes I have 2 cats but I have hard flooring so they scratch the chairs instead! Here’s some polypropylene carpets which have some texture to them but the pile is not too long. I only suggested an independent carpet shop because they have such a great range of carpets.

Thank you - I agree about independent shops for service but am struggling to find a suitable colour. What are the sample swatches you've shown called please. Plus the herring bone colour in the top looks photo looks warming.

Would you consider laying a wood floor if you have health issues. I replaced the carpets upstairs in our house last year as my son and hubby have asthma and I have no regrets. I added rugs for coziness and I can take these out to clean so it’s a nice compromise. Just a thought.

Agree about a wooden floor instead of carpet. Another good point is an independent supplier. You will have to visit a showroom, take some time to look through what is available and some of them will let you bring the sample packs home to try it against your furniture, etc. I have cream pure wool loop pile carpets (they came with the house) and they are a nightmare. Cat claws and impossible to get stains out properly. I have had seagrass, jute and sisal before. They were all impossible to clean. A hard floor with rugs is a much easier (if less cosy) option. Rugs can also be layered which adds warmth in winter. I think you are looking for a sand colour. Cream or beige is too light and impractical.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts/advice. We have wooden floors elsewhere in the house and agree they are practical but want something more cosy for the sitting room. We are only considering buying from an independent shop (the internet picture was to illustrate the colour we are seeking.) I've now got more samples strewn around the room & a couple are looking hopeful

It's not an easy decision but much better that you have samples. It's virtually impossible to decide in the shop. Fingers crossed you find it easier to make a decision that way. I also like to choose carpet based on the wall colour of the room or whatever colour you are going to paint it. In any case carpet should be last but it doesn't always work out that way.
