Living Rooms Design Dilemma

Large open plan living room difficult to design

We have converted our house years ago, but never really manage to settle on the configuration of the living space.
We would like this corner to become a chill zone, where people can read, play board game.
Note it's basically located between the TV room (front of the house) and kitchen (back of the house)

Love your family life pics. Do you have a floorplan or even a sketch just showing the dimensions? I love that internal window. Just looking at the pic adding bookshelves would be a start. Round tables are good for board games or just a large round coffee table. A floorlamp behind the armchair for reading would be ideal. You already have the basics you just need to move them around a bit and reconfigure.

Hello Jeannette, what a lovely project! I've worked on a number of bungalows and they have their own unique challenges. Making the spaces work for our needs today, and for your own family needs have to be the priorities. I would suggest you appoint an interior designer before thinking in detail about the kitchen. An interior designer will find out how you want to use the space and come up with clever floor plan that is workable and beautiful. This is going to be a really important investment for you. Dear James, You have a great feature there with your fireplace and wood burner. I really like the exposed brickwork, and the way this feature within your space flows through from the fireplace, stairs and in your kitchen/ dining & breakfast room. This is a really good focal point for your space in setting a theme. The larger shelf that sweeps round that you currently have an armchair in front of can ideally be removed with the unit under it also being taken out. This would open the area near the stairs; allowing you space to move through into the centre area easily. Opening the stairs themselves will allow light to flood through, this will greatly improve the access you have to natural light. Try to go with a unified neutral tone that reflects the natural light in the day, I'm not saying brilliant white here, a warm cream, with a sandy undertone, one that ties in with the beautiful wood surfaces in your kitchen. Consider spotlights that positioned correctly will illuminate key focal points in the evening to create an atmosphere, and highlight the textures and features of the space. Mirrors are brilliant pieces for reflecting light and creating the feel of more space, and positioned right can help the flow through your space. Use accessories to define your zones such as seating area and kitchen. experiment with pattern and colour to create your theme. Lighting for a large open-plan family room?

Hi Helen This looks like a nice open plan space. Although the advice above is great, I too share your feelings on grids of downlights and think they can be obtrusive to the eye. Good lighting design includes allowing for darker spaces, so that you an accentuate the lit areas - zoning the areas with light is the best way to achieve this. If you want to make a real feature of the pendant above the dining table, maybe consider using trimless downlights above the kitchen island with, say, a medium beam of 36 degrees and then adding in downlights specifically to light the tall kitchen units (assuming that’s what you have). Please see the first image below as an example. By introducing up-down wall lights either side of the television and then adding downlights to light any art or pictures you have, as well as 5amp sockets for table and floor lamps, you can create different layers of lighting. This achieves a balanced and inviting environment. If the patio doors do not stretch right up to the ceiling, you could introduce a coffered ceiling and insert linear LEDs for indirect background lighting. This will also utilise one of the boxed in beams as that would be the height you could drop the edge of the ceiling. The second image below is an example of a coffered ceiling for reference. If you have a lighting control system this would give you all you need to create the lighting environment you have always dreamed of. I agree with everyone saying that open plan is good if you have a dedicated enclosed space for a snug or second living room. My son is an architect and he has seen a major change with people requesting ways to separate spaces to revert back to a more traditional layout. What about privacy for those moments when kids bring their friends over, they really do not want parents listening and being in their space! Designing a space for a growing family means trying to future proof the footprint. No matter how quiet appliances are meant to be, they will end up irritating you. We have a coffee machine, extractor fan, washing machine, tumble dryer, microwave, kettle in our current kitchen and are lucky enough to be able to move the kitchen into a 10sqm study to create a separate utility and then build a rear extension with a kitchen / diner / snug. We also have a ground floor loo and living room on the other side of the house. The noise of appliances we find exceptionally intrusive, partitions and half height walls may help reduce the noise but won’t eliminate them. Have you also thought about where you will store the kids toys, books etc and how easily you will be able to hide food preparation and washing etc from visitor? I do like the idea of having sliding doors if that is at all possible to zone off spaces when you do want a quiet area.
