Think you'd have to move stairs to enlarge front room and then it'll just be longer. You could open it up to the hallway, or replace some (or all) of that wall with glazing to make it feel larger. But best option imho would be to keep it original and if it's too small as family living room, then it'd be a nice snug for watching tv, or a lovely office space. Playroom? Room for adults to retreat to in evening to get away from open plan space? Hobby room? More important thing for me would be to get a bathroom upstairs and also have WC downstairs.

A side or rear extension would be transformative. You could create a larger open-plan kitchen/dining/living area with bi-fold doors opening to the garden, making it perfect for entertaining and everyday living.

A utility room tucked into the extension keeps things practical and tidy.

Layout Inspiration:

Use the reception room as a snug or home office if the back becomes the main living space.

Consider skylights or light wells in the extension to brighten the area.
