Mid century modern kitchen

I’m updating my kitchen on a budget before we rip the whole thing out in one year. Due to the kitchen cupboards, I’m thinking of going for a mid century modern look, and plan on painting the tiles a light blue. Looking for advice on what to do with the counters, due to cost I will probably use contact paper, but what style/colour should I go for, theres currently marble style paper on there but im not sure it works, the photo with the grey surfaces are the original worktops. I’m getting Terazzo vinyl fitted on the floor, so might look a bit of an over kill if i went for that. Any other design ideas are much appreciated!

You are going to hate me for saying this but I would not spend a single penny on it as it is being ripped out in a year. When you have your beautiful new kitchen you will need all your money for things like expensive worktops not to mention some cute little must have's like a hot water/filtered water tap, great handles and gimmicks. Just clean it even though your thoughts are elsewhere now and put all your energy into the new one. I just wouldn't spend any money on it unless it was something you could reuse in the new one like a designer kettle and toaster or new glasses or something decorative like cake stands.

@Isla Cherry i dont hate you for saying that and you’re not wrong! however the 1 year is an ideal situation, i can see the renovation dragging out for longer as we need to knock down walls. im more than happy to spend a couple of hundred pounds updating it for the time being as the kitchen is where i spend a lot of my time!!

Hi Nickyshore - the build started mid September and finished mid-November so it was a pretty quick process. That said there are still elements to finish; the glass for the mezzanine gets fitted in 2 weeks, the final wood flooring isn't down yet and so the skirting boards haven't gone in yet either - but it's a useable space which we're already starting to love. The upheaval was minimal and we lived in the house throughout the build. All of the construction was completed before they knocked through into the kitchen / main house - so really there was only a week when we were in a bit of a mess. Our builders are fantastic and the cleanest / tidiest tradesmen we have ever used!!

Wow, thank you so much for going through the effort of illustrating this for me! Really kind of you! Good point about gold chair and the different finish on the lamp- did say I was clueless didnt i🙈 Kids are 10,4 and 0 so bench could work, but tbh I dont want one, because as much as I like the way it looks, I dont think it would ne that comfortable and we will be using table a lot- meals, family games, working from home, arts and crafts, so I want everyone to be comfortable🙂 So you think the heavy table would go OK with the rest of the decor like the examples above? Swoon supposed to be super unreliable with deliveries and table not available till march so im tempted by 3 week delivery promise from. John lewis... 🙈

I waited for two years once but I appreciate we are all different :)) Just spend as little as possible as it's all going. Are you good at DIY? You could paint tiled backsplash and maybe cupboard doors. I usually remove the wall cupboards as soon as I move somewhere new as I find them oppressive. It doesn't help with storage though. You could start streamlining your supplies of everything in the meantime. It sounds as though you are planning a completely new space so make the transition as seamless as possible. I am a terrible hoarder but you might be the complete opposite. Do you have any seating in your kitchen at present? This article is quite old but there are still some useful pointers.

I think marble works with terrazzo but a very light vein, if such a thing exists in paper! I would paint the walls and sides of the cabinets only in a warm white with maybe a dark colour on the plinth. What colour are the tiles? They look to have a hint of pink in 1 pic but a very yellow cream in another?

As Isla said add a few nice decorative pieces and a potted herb or some stems. If you’ve got any wall space maybe a colourful piece of art

I understand why you’re unsure about the marble-style contact paper for the countertops. It doesn’t quite match the vibe you’re going for, especially with terrazzo flooring coming in. Since terrazzo already has a lot of patterns, I’d go for something simpler on the counters. A warm wood-look contact paper could work really well to tie in with the cabinets and add a bit of warmth. If you’d rather keep it more neutral, a soft beige or light concrete effect would balance everything out without competing with the floor. Swapping out the handles for something more mid-century, like slim black or brass ones, could also be an easy update that makes a big difference. And if you want to bring in more of that retro feel, maybe some fun accessories like vintage-style canisters or a cool statement light fixture would do the trick! Sounds like it’s going to look amazing!
