Bedroom help! organic modern style

Hi everyone

My vibe is very organic modern. I love traditional textures and pieces but with a splash of modern.

We have just decorated our bedroom, and love all the pieces individually, but overall, there just seems to be something missing. My partner wants to kill me because we spent a lot of time and money on the furniture and accessories. But, I don’t know, I can’t shake the feeling that something is just ‘off’. I think it may the the gallery wall, or perhaps the light fitting?

We can’t afford to buy new furniture, but does anyone have any thoughts and advice as to what we do to pull the room together?

I like the room and the ceiling light. Do you have anything over the bed, can you share a photo?

For me the gallery wall is too close to the curtains and to the floor but would be good to see if any of it could go over the bed.

i would also have the curtains taken up so they’re just skimming over the floor, they’re encroaching on the room atm

I would normally go taller for the bedside lamp but really like that one! Perhaps add a photo frame and a small plant on the bedside (varying the height)

I love your room too Dan but also think the gallery of frames doesn’t work. How about keeping the two largest frames and choosing a couple of prints that you like to go in them, possibly bringing in some colour? One frame could hang landscape on the bed wall and the other, portrait, on the wall between the windows.
I’m not a fan of the style of your light but if you wanted to tweak it, how about trying different shades?

My first thought is that the bed looks a little close to the furniture across from the foot of it. I might try the bed on the window wall and instead of the piece on the wall that has the door, eliminate it and get two bedside table pieces with storage to accommodate whatever you were going to store in the piece across from the foot of the bed in your plan. I like beige and gray schemes in the bedroom too, and find some live green plants add a perfect spot of color, or perhaps a kind of acid green silk texture throw pillow. My suggestion is to browse Houzz photos and save the color schemes that you really love! Adding something sparkly will pep up a design that you think is too monochromatic as well - some silver or crystal bling? I added some bling-y chandeliers on either side of the bed in one of my bedrooms, which is fairly monochromatic in beige and gray tones. Some of the throw pillows also have a silvery touch in them.

One plan - thank you thank you thank you... I have been at work all day earning £ to pay for this little lot and have only just seen your plans and advice. Your quick(??) sketch up shows exactly what I was thinking but couldn't visualise. It looks great. What width would you advise is the minimum for the walk in to allow movement space ? It has even prompted the man of the house to get his tape measure out which is good ! This would definitely give us the most storage space of all our options. So now there are 3 options To weigh up. 1. Walk in - Will throw current symmetry of room, but will definitely give the most hidden storage space (perfect as we also need linen and towel storage for the house within this room somewhere). Assuming cost will be studded wall, plastering plus internal fittings. 2. Alcove wardrobes - Will maintain symmetry of the room, will give the least storage of all options. Probably the most expensive option as will require bespoke alcoves with internal fittings. May install fireplace/ dressing table to chimney breast. 3. Wardrobe bank along wall opposite chimney. This would maintain symmetry of alcoves. I think storage would probably be somewhere between the other 2 options. Maybe more potential to get wardrobe company in to have a look. I like the look of the handle less ones shown above. Would leave option of bed on wall either as you come into the room or on the chimney breast. Luciana - thanks for your measurements - really helpful. I will add them onto our plan to check how the space works. I'm in Bristol - which Italian company did you use ? Those fittings are really lovely. I'm not sure where else to source just the interior bits. All - we have the most fabulous carpenter - retired guy who doesn't charge the earth and also just does a few jobs to keep himself out of his wife's hair ! Perfect - he's been one of the finds of our job - a real gem. Really appreciate all the advice - I'm going over to see how monk0104 is getting on with her kitchen plan. What fun this is !!

Hi, I think metallics are great for anything glamorous and also purples and other deep colours. For anything fashion inspired I usually go to classics, like Audrey Hepburn and other 1940's type styles. However if you were thinking something more with colour, framed fashion drawings like the ones Hayden Williams does would be a great way to tie in fashion and colour. Also for lighting I found this really cute bow-shaped lamp which might be perfect.

Hello Joelle, I see your'e being given some great advise and ideas!! If you can't find any suitable vintage wardrobes have you considered having fitted wardrobes - painted the same colour as the pale grey walls so they blend into the background - with small discrete knobs or no knobs/handles (a push opener). Long grey curtains either dark or light I think would look great and very hotel chic. When looking for suitable material don't forget to take a sample of your wallpaper with you to check which colours work best and then ask for samples of the material to take home to check at different times of day ad evening to see which looks best in different lights. I'd consider having the long curtains as 'dress' curtain with tie backs and fit either a roman or roller blind - for privacy, warmth and to keep the room as light as possible. Moving the sideboard to opposite the bed I agree is the best place and becomes the focal point of the room - also great to see when you're actually lying in bed. You could look on e-bay for a large vintage 1950's mirror perhaps frame less with beveled edge to hang above. The long mirror I'd lean on the wall left of the window. I love your grey head board. To add luxury I'd go for a white duvet and pillow cases and use the colours in the wallpaper for throw(s) and cushions. Again don't forget to always have a sample of wallpaper and curtain material with you when shopping for these. I really like the photo of the mid century bedside table you've posted - very much in keeping with your theme and would also look to buy a ceiling light and table lamps again from that period - perhaps on e-bay? Thank you both. I agree, I think it is the gallery wall that is throwing me off. It’s my biggest regret because now we have a load of holes in the wall!

Normally a gallery wall would have more space between each piece of art. Also the bigger pieces of art are so pale they seem invisible, so something with more colour such as browns and burnt orange may make more of an impact? Or split the art up so a couple of smaller ones together and other ones as singles on different walls. Just ideas. Gallery walls are so hard to get right, I’ve tried and failed! Some ideas you may like or hate.

Thank you Sonia! I completely agree with you. I wish I posted on here before putting them on the wall as it’s been super helpful. Hard lesson to learn but I’ll never attempt a gallery wall again 🤣

I have to disagree - the gallery wall is fabulous. The artworks are well chosen and work together beautifully. But they don’t sit well with the light fitting - I’d choose something simpler. And I’d also consider painting the door in an eggshell off-white.

I like the gallery wall but a simpler light fitting like the Octo pendant would warm up the room and add a touch of scandi. If its too expensive there are plenty of dupes for sale too. Holloways of Ludlow sells them or Scandium or John Lewis. I think your largest three artworks are a bit bland. In time choose something with more green in it.

Youre space has a great organic modern vibe, but I can see why something feels a little 'off'. The black frames stand out quite a bit and maybe there are too many, there aren't enough black accents in the room to tie them in. You could swap for wooden or neutral frames to blend more seamlessly.

The curtains also look too long, which maes them feel a bit heavy. A longer curtain rod placed wider than the window frame would allow the curtain to open up more and feel more intentional. This would also create the illusion of a larger window, bringing in more natural light and softening the overall look.

Some small tweaks like these should help everything feel more cohesive.

Your bedroom looks beautiful, and you’ve clearly put a lot of thought and effort into creating a warm, inviting space. I totally get what you mean about feeling like something is just slightly “off,” especially after putting so much time and money into it. It can be frustrating when you love all the pieces individually, but they don’t quite come together the way you envisioned.

From what I can see, the room has a great organic modern base, with those soft, neutral tones and natural textures. If I had to pinpoint what might be missing, I’d say it’s a little bit of warmth and contrast to balance things out. The gallery wall is lovely, but perhaps it could benefit from slightly larger or more cohesive frames to create a more grounded focal point. Right now, it’s visually interesting, but it might be competing with the rest of the space rather than tying it together.

The light fixture could also be a factor it leans more traditional, whereas your furniture and decor feel softer and more modern. If changing it isn’t an option right now, maybe swapping out the bulbs for warmer tones.

Another thought, would you consider adding some depth with a bit more texture? Maybe a slightly darker throw or some different cushions to break up the neutral palette a bit? Even a simple, subtle rug with a bit of pattern could help add that missing piece.

Honestly, you’ve done such a great job so far, and sometimes it just takes a tiny tweak to make everything click. If your partner isn’t up for any major changes, maybe start small with a little styling shuffle and see how it feels!
