Comments (11)Limited funds and you are thinking about painting the front door? What are you going to achieve by painting any white surface without painting all of the others? There is so much about the picture of that house that I like. The brick really fits the setting. I'm not even convinced the arched window suggested by minnie101 would add anything. The wicket fencing and gate make the statement of what a nice, safe place to live. It is one of the very few examples of a 1970s house that I genuinely like, with no inclination to bulldoze it and start again. OK, the little slat of a window to let more natural light in and add a little something to the exterior appearance maybe. Change the gravel drive for another gravel drive? Why? You haven't shown us enough of the entrance to comment on big wooden gates (or not). r1haz, it appears to me that you want to make your mark on this lovely house. Please think long and hard before doing so in haste. You will have a very long time to dwell on your regret if you get it wrong and look at the before and after pictures from time to time....See MoreWooden pergola/frame around front door??

Update:- - Moved most of the excess pots now except the ivy ones (but put those in smaller dark grey tubs instead so more discreet). - Getting a price for a new window to match the rest - Have been busy jet-washing the back garden & decking down as we are going to look at removing the big old slabs on the corner decking and putting some large slate black stepping stones around to break up all the "cat litter" ;) ha ha. Then paint the decking grey (just started a thread asking for colour advice on these). So the garage.... HELP turns out there is a paint for the uPVC if I can't replace that large monstrosity that is the fascia board, but I need advice on colours please? Really wish I had had a grey door put in now instead of black but that means the garage will have to be a combo of black & white or all black or leave all white. I don't think I can add grey can I if I have white windows and a black door???? what do you all think??...See MoreIdeas to improve exterior entrance porch
Comments (23)As you can see, we actually own a large portion of the drive to the rear which we would never use, and we have been told the neighbour is keen to own, so there is some negotiating to be done there, and hopefully we can take the garden in front of our property. I am wary of putting up fencing just to the side their door , as it could maybe spoil the appearance of the house as a whole, but then I think, why should they get all the glory? There would be added value to visually separating the two properties, for ourselves, but maybe not for them....See MoreDownward sloping drive

But I get your point with budget and gates arent for everyone. I do think though you might always have an issue there we see this a lot in our area. Fitting lots of gates you get to see lots of hedge rows and most of them are poisoned off by Tarmac being laid by the councils and the run off into the soil. Youve also got that massive tree on the drive that will be taking all of the nutrients out of the soil.As a good Idea, Would involve taking out the whole front hedge. But id prob say take out what is there as it will never grow well. trench out as best you can the hedge row and plant something like a New Zeland Previtt Might be a few years to get them to height but you can buy them really cheap at 30/40cm height and they will grow about that again each year and they stay evergreen and grow nice even in pretty dry soil so low maintenance.
