Alternative to carpet for top floor flat

I am looking to replace the carpet in my two bed flat with a wood effect or engineered flooring.Preferred option would be engineered flooring with Regupol
soundproofing layer but I am concerned about losing too much ceiling height. My ceiling is 230cm high currently which is the minimumHave considered LVT but don't like the look and am concerned about allergies to VOC for young childrenFinally, have looked into Amtico/Granorte wood effect cork planks but it's not cheap and people seem to complain about the quality.Soundproofing, wood look, low VOCs, and no more than 150mm thickness are my priorities.Please help this is all getting quite complicated!

Check your deeds before proceeding further. For sound proofing reasons there are often stipulations to have carpet

Thank you. Yes, I am aware of leasehold requirements and hard flooring is allowed with soundproofing underlayer

Hello Robin, No need to remove anything just add a huge mirror on the right hand wall with some height as I suggested earlier in the thread, then you will get a border reflected and also the arch! It is quite important to work with what you have, and you can cleverly with the oversized mirror! eBay have a shop for them! Once you paint frame to match the walls you will see how useful it could be. Possibly 8ft by 8ft as high as you can go to get the arch in! It's what I would do.. :))

You could add a dado rail and put it a little higher than normal. Paint above and below. The benefit of the dado is that when you need to repaint because of scuff marks you need only paint the easier lower half as this is where the marks will inevitably be. Ps a cream cleaner will get rid of lots of marks on wipeable paints

Is there a specific reason why you do not want carpet? If it is allergy or something similar than I totally understand but there are so many different beautiful carpets available now that I am not sure why you would want hard flooring? If you added a layer of insulation then you are going to be under the minimum ceiling height. I think the combination of the insulation or soundproof layer + the depth of engineered wood flooring is going to make your celing height less than 2.3m.

Thank you @Isla Cherry You are right about ceiling height. I had not considered the implications of going under ceiling height minimum. I have looked at carpet and unnatural flooring but feel that it would look pretty similar to what I have now. I guess the best option might be the wood effect cork flooring I mentioned ealier although this is more risky as this type of flooring is not commonly used

I get you. It's not my favourite choice either except in bedrooms. I far prefer hard flooring myself. Do you know what is under your carpet currently floor wise and do you own or rent your flat? Let me think about alternatives for you and have a look at Regupol soundproofing.

@Isla Cherry you re a star! The flat I own is from 1990. The thin carpet I currently have has no underlayer and we re fine soundwise

Do you have a budget in mind? Any idea of the total square meterage that you would like to replace? I'm no LVT fan either. Too plasticky IMO. Let me see what options you have! I take it you have measured the ceiling height from the carpet?

Yes I measured ceiling height from carpet and it is 230cm so I am now ruling out engineered wood. Carpet must 5 mm thick. Budget is not too much of a consideration now. I just want to get things right. Surface is around 35 sqm

Do you know what the flooring is under the carpet? No underlay makes it very hard. If you have chipboard (as most modern buildings) then it may be possible to swap that for a wooden or engineered wooden floor. Is the flat cold in winter and do you have radiators?

So I need to find a super thin engineered wood or something similar with minimal insulation/soundproofing boarding underneath. There are other issues with raising the floor like having to trim doors etc. Do you have a floorplan and can you mark the area of floor that you would like to change? I need to see how it fits with the bedrooms and bathroom. What is the current flooring in the bedrooms?

Have a look at this flooring. It's just 11mm thick so not much more than a carpet. I will look at low thickness insulation too.

Thank you so much @Isla Cherry. This is incredibly helpful. Interestingly they sell Woodura at Wood and Beyond which is a shop I was in contact with on Friday. They offer installation services and have good ratings on Trust Pilot. Price is a bit higher than I was hoping for but I may just have to save for a bit longer. Please do let me know if you find anything Regupol or other soundproofing layers. Thanks again.

Glad I could be of some help to you. Most things are usually possible just at an eye watering price! I'll keep looking for very thin soundproofing:)). It's usually worth saving for better quality. It also gives you time to plan the whole thing properly. Think about threshold heights of doorways, doors and the interface between the different flooring.
