Design Dilemma Living Rooms

What colour should I paint my living room to go with black & gold

My sofa is black and gold & I'd like a colour that compliments it on my walls. Any advice? The wood work in the room is light oak.Thank you

Hello,

I would steer clear from white (unless it's a very chalky and warm white) as it will look quite drab and two-dimmensional.

I would suggest experimenting with more saturated warm colours such as pink, aubergine, mushroom, deep yellow or green?

It might sound like a tacky looking shoice but the key is to get a shade with the right amount of colour and warm grey undertones so it feels a bit earthy and grounded rather than gaudy :)

Hello decor178, Depends what the rad looks like. I would usually suggest paint the colour of the walls.. If something fantastic and old style like the two I love which are fantastic anywhere.. They have a modern industrial finish which deserves to be shown off.. then I would suggest grey or charcoal but a matt finish rather than gloss. They do though come in a range of finishes.. from chrome to nickel to a copper/brassy finish.. Again it depends on the walls... better to see what you are talking about and the room itself with the furnishings to really get an idea.... .. . :))Or if a box standard plain and boring.. painted as wall will be or add a cover as Brandi suggested- quite plain and then paint as walls are painted.. ..

If you are looking for a green based grey I would recommend farrow and ball Old White. We are just having our house repainted this colour. I wanted grey but we are surrounded by greenery and the blue based greys looked light blue rather than grey. The green base to Old White works well with greenery. Its also a very classic colour and so is easy to live with (or at least I hope so!). I have been amazed at how different the different greys look when put next to one another. All look grey in isolation. Together you can very clearly see that some are green based, some blue based and some purple based.

Hi Jessica. Congratulations! I agree with Jean adding a picture rail will lower the ceiling height. I would also treat this as one room re paint but you could add a feature wall of paint or paper, perhaps the chimney breast? if the room is light ( I've got a couple of really bright rooms which come out dark when I take pics!) then I think the green will be fine. The green goes nicely with the wood and other colours. Splashes of gold will also work well. As Jean said you can zone the areas with rugs (perhaps complementary rather than matching), art, flowers for the table? and maybe a floor lamp. As it's a long and relatively narrow room I would add a large mirror on the long wall to make it feel wider. Good luck!

A pic of the room would help immensely. Without seeing natural light and your other furnishings as well as the floor it's quite difficult to suggest a colour. There are too many variables.
