Best sink material for hard water?

We have very hard water. I’m looking at ceramic sinks (but scared about smashing things) or stainless steel (less keen on the look). Any thoughts on which would hold up better with limescale etc.?

i prefer stainless steel but only if undermounted. Specialist steel cleaner or bar keepers friend is great for keeping them spotless. You have to accept the scratches though or be very careful. Limescale is no problem and we have exceptionally hard water here in the South West. Limescale is more of a problem with taps even the Quooker has to be serviced once a year and limescale removal is part of the service.Blanco make exceptional taps. My Culina S never had a limescale problem and you can replace the screw off end if necessary. It's also a dual function tap with sprayer.

Ive never broken anything in a ceramic sink tbh. You could also consider fireclay, i think its just another type of ceramic but different clay and fired at a higher temperature which makes it more durable but typically dearer. Anything white in colour will also hide any limescale but (imo) it’s the taps and plug that are more of a concern with limescale!

My step-mum swears by her water softener if you’ve got the room

I had a black composite kitchen sink a few houses ago and if you have hard water they do mark. But I’ve got a black bathroom basin now and I only got it because I was putting a water softener in and so far (nearly a year) it’s fine. Son is messy with toothpaste but is easily cleaned. So my thinking is if you’ve got hard water then install a water softener??

wall mounted taps - best type?

Hi, I spent all day looking at taps , LOL. I’ve learnt ... - Get a good reliable brand because it’s harder to fix a wall mounted tap than a sink tap. - if you plan on tiling your wall then get one with a backing plate so it’s a bit easier to get to to fix (mine is on a stud wall so I can access it easily from the rear should it go wrong!) - not seen any specific with short projection but I found one called Crosswater Kai which has two lengths (inc a short one) but you can often tell from the pics if it looks short as well. I’ve just ordered one which is a mixer tap so it onl has one hot/cold lever. Although the 3 holes look more symmetrical, I prefer just one mixer tap personally. We had a v small cloakroom basin like your sized ones at our last house and a wall tap would have been better as it was hard to get your hands under it. Perhaps search for compact taps or cloakroom basin taps?

I can only comment on Corian as my friend has had worktops and sink in it. She doesn’t like it all as it gets easily watermarked, even when the water is wiped immediately and it scratches easily. The scratch marks can be sanded, but this has to be done by a professional - difficult to find someone! I have a ceramic sink which I love - it’s easy to clean, and no I’ve never broken any crockery in it! Ceramic does have a more country vibe though.

A composite sink might work for you. Available in an assortment of colours and if not wiped after every use then limescale might adhere but you won’t be able to see it like you would with stainless steel.

If you’re planning on having a boiling water tap I would not recommend ceramic.

white ceramic sink, white plastic bowl, saves on water and also the water will be hotter [so you save on heating]as its not losing energy heating up the ceramic, keeps the ceramic sink clean and no limescale build up
