Bungalow Dreams!
Hi everyone,
We’re planning to reconfigure our single-storey bungalow and would really appreciate some advice - especially on how to approach the layout efficiently and keep costs as low as possible without compromising too much on comfort or function.
Here’s what we’re hoping to achieve:
• Move the main living area to the back of the house to better connect with the garden.
• Create a bright, open-plan kitchen/dining/living space.
• Relocate the bedrooms to the front of the house.
• Add an extra single bedroom or home office (doesn’t need to be large).
• Include an ensuite for the main bedroom.
• Fit in a small, separate utility room (even a compact one would help!).
• Remove the ceiling in the living area (vault it) to create a greater sense of space, and add rooflights for extra natural light.
We’re open to moving internal walls but would like to avoid extending the footprint unless absolutely necessary. Our priority is to make the best use of the existing space while improving flow and natural light.
If anyone has done something similar or has layout suggestions, floor plan inspiration, cost-effective design ideas, or just tips from experience - we’d love to hear from you!

26 days agolast modified: 26 days agoYou could consider rebuilding the lean-to to create an ensuite to a master bedroom by combining with the current kitchen and move the main bathroom to the front left of the property (hopefully the main sewer pipes are going towards the front of the property). You could put the washer/dryer in this ensuite or in a cupboard in the hallway.
I haven't drawn the full width of the lean-to as I had expected to remove it!! But i think you will be short of storage space if you don't keep it ….and i would remove the fireplace and have one in the new sitting area.

Comments (4)thanks for comments. Yes I thought of those things too but Render may be too costly but I like the idea of wood if not too much maintence. The bricks are good too so doesnt really need render, except it would look better! I was also wondering about the render that is already there??! replace with the wood? Comments (27)Jonathan, moving the bathroom as you have was actually Plan A but I got cold feet about the cost of moving the bathroom although I loved the idea of a line of sight from front door to back garden. We only roughly sketched it and having seen your beautiful floorplan I am thinking we’ll regret it if we compromise instead. The bungalow looks so much more balanced than it does at present and has a flow to it, which it currently completely lacks. Thank you so much for taking the time to draw it up so nicely :) love the addition of a cupboard in hallway to bedrooms and one in entrance hall as Rinq latterly suggested (completely agree on need for this Rinq) and access to toilet from garden - have 3 year old and 10 week old so very necessary, as is catching the mud before it comes indoors!
