Ideas to create a den for teens

Hi there!

We are currently renovating our kitchen/utility and the temporary kitchen will become a den for a teen girl (16) and boy (14).

What do we do with this room???!

We have a sofa bed which we’d like to use if possible (only 4 years old) which is blue mix (see pic) and we can’t afford he to change the fireplace, although we need to paint the surround and tiles!!

Any suggestions of wall colours and colours to paint the fireplace??

I think it would be a mistake to paint the fire place, the tiles look to be a lovely rich red and the wood sets that off. I would talk to your kids, but I think you should go dark in here, a deep blue or green on the walls, nice lamps on side tables, a fluffy rug, coffee table or upholstered bench to rest your feet on. I assume a tv will be in there too? More flexible seating for friends?

I suggest something like this, excuse the placement of the sofa and the removal of the side window. I was in hurry so no time to fix the image the sofa should be placed on the wall across the fireplace. The upper part of the fireplace is deleted in my suggestion for a place in case you want a TV. If you want to paint the fireplace I suggest using White if the room color is colorful like this.

But if you paint the room with neutral color like white, grey, beige then you can paint the fireplace black, darker shade of blue or green something like that. If you tight on budget you can leave it out like this as its not too out of place.

Furniture wise Computer table cause what teenager wouldnt like it can double as study space, shelves for their trinkets and books, maybe low cabinets on the wall in the corner under the window, place faux plant here and there as decoration

For sure discuss with the kids what they are interested recently their fav bands/artist, neon sign, pet, artworks cause you can hang guitar or makrame depends on your children hobby.

I suggest using neutral theme and color as the children will grow up and the room can used as other function immidiately

OnePlan: Hi, thanks so much for answering!! Yes, I was thinking so too, other ideas have been candles and low watt bulbs for lamps. No furniture ordered, no specific bed needed apart from no high beds. Budget, eh, sort of, but no specific idea, we aren't minted that's for sure! I would *love* a chair, an arm chair, next to the wardrobe [in the corner] but every chair I've put into the plan has really taken a large chunk out of the room. No TV, I use my laptop for everything. Dog does sleep on the bed, he's black and white [possibly the worst combo eh!] and he's a Springer, so not a huge malter, lighter bedding would probably be sensible. Absolutely fine! I didn't want to ramble in my original post but knew there were so many questions to answer. For the single wardrobe, I was thinking mirrored. For the chest of drawers, white I think, I've been looking on eBay for that. I love the chest of drawers I've attached a picture of. Would a taupe look too dark on my walls? If you mean placing the chest of drawers at the bottom of my bed, then it wouldn't fit due to the depth, if you mean across the room next to the wardrobe, then that was a space I was planning on leaving free for a possible chair. I was thinking of keeping the walls fairly neutral so that if I ever want to change the colour scheme, I can do. I was thinking perhaps taupe, do you think that would be too dark? I love your colour scheme suggestion though! If anyone has any suggestions on where I could get a chest of drawers similar to the one below, that would be fantastic.

Thanks for the above- some really good ideas for us to look into. We've actually already knocked through the kitchen and dining room, and utility with a glass block partition between kitchen and utility. The conservatory should be the best room in the house, overlooking the garden and koi pond that I've just built, but its obviously just standard upvc and gets limited use. The orangery idea really appeals, and would create our second living area that we really want. Wouldn't really want to convert the existing lounge but I guess one option to look into is rather than trying to get a two storey extension, if this simply isn't going to work, is just do a single storey extension out to the front porch area perhaps and side to create a master bedroom. This would also have the benefit of overlooking, and opening out onto the garden. A house on an adjoining road has done something similar with vaulted ceiling and looks really smart. Floor plan like this (but rather than sun lounge and utility it would be master bedroom and en suite: Still not sure how the roof of any extension would tie in but guess this could be overcome somehow. Then we could look into other ideas as both of you suggested upstairs to open it up a bit but without large scale changes. And as you say could all be done over a period of time rather than all at once which would appeal

Thank you ok this is what I think you may be able to do, If the platform can be removed the use this side (the widest side for two hanging rails one above the other approx 1 metre in between, On the narrow side, left of door, use this space to create shelving floor to ceiling this can follow along the back wall opposite the door with a supporting side to hold them. This gives double the hanging space and loads of shelf storage for bedding and the things already stored. The hanging side will only take up approx 600 mm depth from wall so you will also have space to store any freestanding tall items that will not fit on the shelves. Shelves could be spaced at 300 mm apart depending on what you need to store. Hope this helps.

You could paint the fire surround white? Or a deeper shade as below.

thats nice there some client creating similar space for their children with various theme like harry potter, disney, handpaintings etc, btw if you want bench seating in bay window area which can double as storage and place the computer table on the wall below the side window, it somehow very comfortable for reading and napping
