Is 2.8m high enough for a large room

Hi, I am renovating and extending a 1930s house. It has a large garden and we are extending into a part of it with a rear kitchen extension to become a dining kitchen living room - the room will be about 7.7m wide and 9m long and we are dropping the floor as much as possible to get a hopeful 2.8m internal height.

(1) Is this enough height for a room this size?

(2) We want to put in Crittall style sliding doors to open out to the patio and garden - does anyone have any images to share of a room of similar dimensions (my worry is that it will be dark and look like a letterbox as obviously the windows would not go all the way to the ceiling)

You can make the sliding doors as high as you like (within manufacturers restraints) - we have 2.5m bifold doors in a 2.8m ceiling. Definitely get taller than standard sliding doors and have the top of the windows be at the same height as the top of the sliding doors. So taller than standard windows too.

That is a very large room though - is there windows at the sides too, and from rooflights in ceiling?

it's a kitchen extension on a semi; rooflights yes, and side small windows on a thin side-alley; the question is more about proportions and looking for image samples for the given width/height.

Thank you all. Apologies I'm not sure how to answer individually. I agree that the skirting board jutting out looks very strange, most rooms in the house have some 'interesting' design choices. Would you believe that the man who made these changes has now set up his own building company! The lamp on the left is from IKEA, I only bought it a few months ago so it should still be available. Unfortunately the lamp on the right is a flea market find so no idea where it came from. The second alcove is substantially smaller than the one with the bookcase currently in it. I'm just concerned that it may look 'unbalanced' with the built in shelves. I haven't managed to find pictures of rooms with alcoves differing in width. I do love the idea of built in shelves, it seems safer than our current bookcase and adding the storage underneath the last shelf would be helpful. I have found an original black cast iron Victorian fireplace with a width of 125cm versus the 140cm of the chimney. Would this work with the green wall? The room is painted in Breakfast Room Green and I've attached a photograph of the fireplace. Thank you for the suggestion about the mirror. This is the first time that the living room has been tidy enough to have the mirror against the chimney breast so it's helpful to have opinions on it's size. Thank you all again!

Just looking over old questions I posted - after various extension plans on the kitchen .. all to the approved stage so a lengthy process - we finally agreed and are part way through a much smaller extension. This allows for a second extension on the back adding another bedroom, increasing the size of another and adding a third bathroom The reason I’m commenting on this post is unknowingly our final extension on the kitchen open plan is similar to that posted by you @more architecture. Hadn’t realised until looking through these old posts. Must admit have tossed and turned thinking we should have stayed at the biggest we could go... many opinionated people telling us this too. At some point you just have to make a decision and go. Although I still question it. Everyone’s comments on here have really helped the process .. so thank you.

Not as fun as the swing (what a fab idea!) but maybe try to make it a sort of lobby/arrival space. So you could have a small console table with a narrow lamp, or set of shelves to the left of the hall door, this can be a place to drop mail and papers and stop it accumulating in the kitchen? and then perhaps a mirror between the two doors would be nice. PS lovely worktop - is it real marble?

Thanks for the mentions Jules Mc ! :-) Hi Debzip . If you have open walk in robes spaced at 550 open robe - 800walk space 550depth backing onto another 550 - 800 550 550 800 etc - so your robes go from to the length from eves to window - this could afford you a mix of single hanging and 3/4 hanging and possibly double hanging at highest height and shelves or drawers etc too . Finish each section with a std door to keep it tidy. Reduce the depth down nearer bedroom entrance and keep a dressing table area under the roof light ... that’s probably what I’d suggest . Although the previous suggestions are also fab ! Hope that helps a bit ! (Adding a rough sketch to clarify ).
