How can I bring natural light or the feel of it into a dark flat?
Comments (8)Hi, I presume you are looking for cosmetic solutions & not things like solar tunnels that are fitted into your ceiling via your roof to pull in more natural light? If so, then you can go 2 ways:- 1) if your room is north facing then don't fight it. Go dark & moody (glamour) with your decor and add lots of reflective surfaces to make the room stand out. We did this in our Nth facing Victorian room and it worked a lot better than when it was all white! 2) or, use clever things like light reflective paint (dulux) , add mirrors onto the bottom walls and even on the side walls to reflect light from the window back into the room. Mirrors are really good at doing this so it's worth experimenting with where your light hits. Any Reflective surface - ie silk finish on walls and not matt, light & bright furniture. 3) you can of course add in extra lighting but that doesn't resolve the issue of the room being dark in the day. Even in our current house which has a lot of light, I still have to turn the light on any room which is not full on South facing - and even in those rooms, that's only on the sunny days!...See MoreHelp choosing paint colour/s for hallway and landing space
Comments (14)Hi, I'm currently going through the same issue, Trying to find the right combo of paints to paint the hallway. I am looking to panel the part beneath the dado to prevent the ever so frustrating scuffing which occurs at sharp corners and am unsure on the colour combo. I was considering grey and white too but I'm scared that it may make the space feel too cold and dull especially as the only light will be through the door which won't be much. What colour combo's would you recommend to make the space feel luxurious and modern, yet not too clinical and cold?? I'd like the paint to be dulux preferably. what is the quality of Valspar paint like, I've seen it at DIY stores but don't know if it reaches standard of dulux? any reviews?? thanks...See MorePaint colour for hall stairs and landing
Comments (4)It would be really useful to post a few photos. A lot depends on the actual space, but also the exact colour of the carpet and tiles. I don't think I would go for pure white with quarry tiles, it could look a bit harsh. Earthy stoney colours could work well with quarry tiles....See MoreHall, stairs and landing decor
Comments (7)If you will be keeping the Oak doors then i wouldn’t paint the architrave and skirting in white. I would leave them in the Oak finish. It’s easier maintenance and then you will end up going through the rest of the house doing the same creating yourself more work. Take a look a Cromarty. It’s a Farrow & Ball colour but you can match it from other cheaper suppliers such as Johnstones. It’s a lovely light green that’s not overpowering and looks lovely contrasting against Oak woodwork. Regarding a shoe box I’d be a bit cautious of taking up space near to the bottom of the stairs. I always worry about anyone slipping down stairs and falling into it....See More- last month
