Bedroom Makeover Anxiety!

Hi everyone, my husband and I have had our main bedroom redecorated. 99% of the house is painted in Crown Sail White but my husband really wanted a dark and dramatic bedroom - so we went for Crown Family Tree on all the walls, and an exotic wallpaper behind the bed (Jungle Paradise in Black). We also invested in some pendant lights beside the bed - and we both love the look so far!

Then... the curtains went up! We went for Old Gold Velour, floor length. Put them up at night, looked very dramatic and opulent! Then popped the bedding on, we tried to stay neutral here with a "Sand" collection....but it feels like it's all gone a bit wrong now!

I woke up this morning and decided the curtains have to go - far too bright and dare I say.. a bit cheap looking?! (maybe just need a good steaming) And the bedding is just a miss! The colour is more mushroom, or putty maybe? My husband thinks I've nailed the "exclusive s*x club look" - but that really wasn't ever the plan!!!

HELP!

I now have serious interior design anxiety!! How do I pull it together?!

The wall colour, wallpaper, bed and furniture will all stay (the bed doesn't help, being so enormous and velvet), so I need to work around that.

Do I go green on the curtains and try colour drenching it to tone it down a bit? And how do you make sure the colour is right when all these shops have hideous electric light! What about the bedding?! All thoughts, advice, and words of encouragement much appreciated!

P.S Photos aren't great as it's a very dark day, so some taken in natural light, some in electric. Ignore the large white cushions, they are just the inners, don't have covers for those yet! And the extra lamp is because the electrician forgot the switch for the new pendants!

I think your curtains highlight the yellow/gold in the wallpaper and keep the room from looking too oppressive. Green curtains may be too dark and moody. So before you change the curtains how about trying about trying gold duvet cover set? Some ideas below from Dunelm. I would suggest taking a sample of your wallpaper to the store.

I think the curtains look lovely and really lift the scheme, but I do feel a lovely deep green velvet would be even nicer. I agree the bedding colour doesn’t look right. I’ma big fan of simple white bedding that can be dressed with cushions and a throw and introduce some colour there, don’t have to be expensive.

For me the curtains are definitely the wrong colour. They don’t compliment the room colours, but clash. Dark green would look better.

You may want to reconsider keeping curtains as well as the shutters, as they don't keep out all the light, particularly as you said the room is bright & south facing. Especially in the summertime when it gets lighter so much earlier. From someone who's been awake since 5am because of this problem! Note to self: must get round to choosing curtains! Also, F&B cornforth white is very pale. We've used it on the interior of our windows, but I think it would be a little boring if we used it on the walls, too close to white, especially in a room as bright as yours. A friend with very good taste recommended Little Greene's French Greys. It's a lovely warm grey & there are several different tones. Don't be scared of even the darkest one as even that isn't too strong on the walls! Our master bedroom used to be at the south facing front of a 30's house too, but after rebuilding we're now at the back of the house. Although I love looking out over the garden, I do miss that glorious sunshine you get! (Although not at 5 in the morning!). Have fun deciding, and remember you can always repaint if you really hate anything!

Hi, The room is lovely. It's clean and contemporary and gives the feel you want. If you want it to feel more grand you need to think more grand. A larger headboard. You need it dominate the space. Grey is fine but increase the height by at least double what you can see already. The bed needs to be focal and will stop the 'flat' feeling that some people are getting. Same with curtains. Go over sized, draped on the floor luxurious texture. You're getting there. It's a great space. If you add colour it will take away from the crisp look and style the space has now so maybe play around with it but I don't think it's required for what you are trying to achieve. Adding a little black will add definition so may not go a miss :) Good luck.

To help to make things look cohesive it's good to use repetition and think about focal points. The first thing you probably see is the curtains which means they are the star of the show, this is because they are so saturated they dominate the room. I would address the bedding, pick out the coral colour from the wall paper and buy some pillowcases to link to the wall paper. Likewise pick out a neutral form the wall paper for a duvet etc. This would at least make the bed a focal point and it might help before addressing the curtains. If you do use opposing colours such as red and green make sure they are not too saturated as it will look too 'ding dong' and Christmassy.

I would recommend olive for the bed accent

As for the curtain I suggest lighter shade of green or white cause the same dark green can make the room more dark

Go for olive, green or teal bedding - something that picks up the wallpaper colours. I'd be tempted to go for roman blinds in olive, green or teal also

Here me out!

The curtains look great! The yellow is really going to help when the winter mornings come. Right now it just sounds like you're not used to them. But personally I think they work a treat with the wallpaper and the green! A yellow bedsheet would really compliment the curtains, i think it could also do with more cushions on the bed - a green and yellow together. You could also try a green throw draped over the end of the bed to hide some of the light grey bed frame and make it all look more cohesive. Might be a bit too much of a stretch lol but maybe pull in some of the pink from the wallpaper through small cushions on the bed and/or through vases/decor.
