Suggestions for living and dining space layout

Hi everyone. We are considering knocking through the wall between kitchen and dining room (marked in yellow on floorplan - wall with TV on it in the image)

The dining/living area is already one space (dry wall marked with Red Cross is no longer there).

We would be grateful for any ideas on how best to lay out / divide the space to incorporate a dining area (possibly near the kitchen), living and (currently) play area - but with the ability now or in the future to put up a drywall or divider to convert the play area into a second lounge as kids grow older.

There is a log burner at the point marked in purple

Hello Robin,

This is my layour idea for your lounge:

It's just a quick mock-up but it gives you an idea how the furniture could be placed in this space.

I placed the table next to the kitchen with a corner sofa in the middle of the space facing TV unit (pale green).

In the bottom of the room next to the stove I have put a smaller sofa nnd an armchair to create a second seating area. This could be the play area.

The light blue element at the top could be a drinks cabinet visually seperating the dining room from the kitchen.

What do you think about this layout?

I have to agree with Jarek from studiomeedetc, if you make it into open space it will be the best option. I quickly knocked a 3D for you (no strings attached), hope that helps.

Oh, I was just about to say that I love that idea but then I remembered an issue: there is the radiator where the TV would be and no plug sockets. I don't think it's an ideal place to put sockets either because of the radiator there and the fact there's a bathroom on the other side of the wall (so I'm guessing lots of water pipes). I am a big fan of the whole room being brought into the layout though - my own ideas seem to break it into 2, which I think under-appreciates a lot of the space. I've attached another design that I had but couldn't add to the original post, just for the sake of throwing more ideas out there, and to clarify the location of other rooms etc.

How about a floor lamp in the corner opposite the door with an armchair & bookshelf / storage unit next to it along the right hand wall then a sofa opposite (with the back to the window. A rug and / or a coffee table in between to create a more defined sitting area? The dining table could then fit behind the sofa by the windows. It looks like a gorgeous, light & airy space - congratulations on your move!

Thanks for all the comments. Yes we have hired a designer already and she did 5 different design concepts for us- we narrowed it down to those two. I posted on here as sometimes it’s just really nice to get a completely fresh perspective and I know how knowledgeable and helpful everyone on here is 😄 I took the comments from here and we explored another 3 designs and have now settled on what we think is the best overall layout. We will still need to decide what exactly goes where in the kitchen (and I am sure I will be posting for help and opinions on that too) but for now we have decided how to zone the room 😄
