DIY Exteriors Paint

Please help! Porch and Garage paint a

Hi

I are fixing up our porch which had a leak and some rot. Now that I have replaced all the timber, I am stuck in which colour I should paint the porch and garage (paint is chipping).

I was thinking an off white like champagne colour or a very light sage colour but I am but am not sure nor am I confident with home deco colours. Maybe I should stick to the original brilliant white.

So have you already painted all your new timber in the porch white? I would start by using a visualiser app such as Dulux or Cuprinol to see which colours look good. I would use the visualiser to ‘paint’ your porch, garage doors, the wood above your porch and your fence panels. Hope you don’t mind me saying but all the net curtains at your windows are making it appear very dated.

Thank you so much for the advice and yes I do need to change the window treatments infact the whole house will be revamped when we do the extension. BI will try the dulux apps!

Hello Heidi, One thing that might help is using a neutral table cloth.. Consider a really oversized mirror that could lean up against one of the walls something like 8ft by 6ft if you want to get the feel of space here and the right side would be good on the long wall.. The opposite wall you could leave bare.... .. Remove the rug as this defines the floor area under the table which you don't want to do.. Hang a shade on the ceiling light and take off the frames from the window.. You could have a slim console here but otherwise leave the windows free so they remain as open as possible... What your aim is here is to get the eye to see the room as a whole.. At the moment the eyes go to the frames and then the brightly patterned table cloth which does emphasise the table and thus the size of the room... Place all the chairs round the table and at each end of the table so they are evenly proportioned.. Easily presented as an invaluable space for dining. Shabby chic or elegant sophistication both are possible with some tweaking to the dimensions... ie the Mirrors! I think these would see you through! : ))

Hi, need advice on the frontage of our garage conversion. I've attached a sketch of the area. I don't want it to look cheap or completely out of place. What I've sketched is what the idea is at the minute but I don't think it will look right when completed. The part I'm questioning is having a door and window adjacent to the front door. The front door is a big upvc porch type thing with a window next to the door. Won't it look weird???? Area marked out in red on sketch. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, even on the rest of the design....thanks in advance!!!! Whilst we love our house it is an ugly 1960s house from the outside so every little bit to make her more beautiful helps!!!!

hi Neverforever, I think you really need to repair the entire side of the house- looking at the photos you provided, the entire side of the house look as though you have a number of spalled bricks,which have suffered from frost damage. whatever you decide as a finish , you should address these in the final decision to protect your home. I think that the amount of space lost at the side cladding the house in timber , would not lose a lot of space in the driveway. you have pipes at the side protruding at low level. Can you advise on the width of the space between the two houses. you own half of this width and have a right of way over the neighbouring house for driving your car, so this shouldn't really cause issues with the neighbour. A timber clad would provide a modern update to the look of the porch, whilst the render and paint would be a simpler update. you might want to look at external insulation and a render finish to the entire house. This is something the government is looking to push for improving the energy use of the housing stock in the uk. best Rowland

The extension is in 2 years time hopefully and the porch is leaking and has rot. The garage has chipped paint so might as well fix porch and paint both. It’s all DIY for now. The professional build will be done when we extend.

See how you get on with the visualiser and please post some colours you like, if you want some feedback. I’d keep it light but definitely not brilliant white. This photo is from your own ideas book and I think it looks good.
