Should I go trend-led or more classic in this hallway and stairs?
Hi houzzy folks, my design dilemma is how to decorate the main stairs and hallways in our early Victorian house. The top floor is all strong colours and Farrow & Ball (F&B) French Grey on the doors and architraves, but I am too reminded of my old school colours to continue that on the doors and architraves down through the house.
I'm going to have sisal herringbone carpet laid and am considering two different looks;
1) a more on trend dark colour below the dado rail and a classic lighter colour like F&B Off White or Little Greene Travertine Mid or Travertine - does anyone have a good combination to suggest? even better if you have pictures!
2) a prettier more classic look with something like F&B Blue Green on the walls and Pointing on ceiling and woodwork (see the picture)
All suggestions welcome! I'm also thinking of taking the bannister rail to a richer darker mahogany color - what do you think?

Comments (18)Hi Kusten, the tiles in my photo are for floors and walls, I think they would work best on the floor in your hallway. If you decided to use them you could paint the walls in a neutral shade to match. They are called Classic Alternatively if you want to half tile your walls you could go for something else like this for example. I took on my architect who was quite emotional about it all- he loved the bathroom and thought I was *mad* to want to change it. However, I did and the builder helped us find some tiles. Way too often, people spoil the most beautiful period houses, trying to be too clever with garish and over the top decor or too many "on trend", fashion features. Comments (14)We agonised for ages over whether we should paint our stairs in our Edwardian or not as they were horrible 90s orange varnished pine for the most part. The banister and newel post however are a nice oak in a darker colour. We painted the walls in the hall F&B Old White and used a complementary white called Slipper Satin (more of a cream really) on the treads and risers and spindles and left the banister and newels as they were. The colours have given us a classic but neutral scheme that shows off our original tiled floor. Looking at yours though, the newels, spindles and banister are absolutely lovely and if you are lightening up the entire space anyway, it would be a beautiful feature. If you do decide to paint then you need to decide if you want to highlight the feature or tone it into the rest of the decor. last monththanks for your thoughts on this, I did decide to go fairly classic but quite bold so using Little Greene Vulcan (dark rich grey) below and on the dado rail, and Little Greene Mid Travertine on the walls and ceiling. All the doors and architraves are going to be the same dark Vulcan colour. It is on!

Much as I love the natural wood, I feel the strong colour of the Vulcan will overwhelm it. How about something like this wood stain?
