Can't you just level it out? It's hard to tell from the photo but you could mix up some yourself and lose the lip

Thank you createperfect, that's a good idea. I'll be meeting my builder over the weekend to discuss options but I'm also going to the house tonight to have a look as they've laid out the cupboards as best they can. Hi Daisy, The wall units are 900 high so then they would need to be right up to the ceiling too to run in line with the tall units wouldn't they? I actually like units going right up to the ceiling anyway, I just worry how it will look with a thin plinth and whether all will line up. I don't think cutting down the tall units would work either as one of them is a swing out pantry so the internal wouldn't fit and that's the costly part. What do you think?

Normally I like a painted, period staircase, but you effectively already have a suspended staircase. Paint and live with it until you can do a glass banister properly. Treads and risers can be painted and a runner fitted. Here is the staircase in our last house (1938 semi), before and after painting. I actually changed the spindles to something more ornate! Hi Emma, Firstly, I’ve put together a quick layout for you of the Lounge / Dining Space. I think this would really help to make the most of your space. I’d centralise the TV wall unit, as this does throw the eye off a little when looking into the space and if possible wall mount your TV. Another piece of advice would be to detach the ‘chaise’ part of your three-seater. This could be used as a coffee table, if you were to pop a decorative tray on it? Making the space lighter and brighter… I’d invest in new window treatments as the Roman blind isn’t doing you any favours. Being in an already North facing room, all this blind will do is minimise the natural light that you could have. You could either move the blind further up the wall so that it is just a touch over the window when fully open, thus making the eye believe your window is in fact larger. Or, look into a nice pair of curtains in a light colour to detract from the darker window frame. If you are looking to make some decorative changes, I’d advise buying a mirror for along the dining room wall (your current feature wall) and make this central to where the dining table will be positioned. As this will help to reflect some light into your space. I’d replace your current shade in the lounge with a light more in keeping with you current industrial style lighting over the dining table, however, I'd insist on going for something more flush to the ceiling. (Another suggestion maybe to add some spotlights into the ceiling, if you're looking to really add a good source of light to the room, and of course this would be great for in the evenings. You could even add a sconce or two. Although these options would be more costly.) And should you wish to take the plunge in changing your sofa go for something more in keeping with the rest of your space. Your style seems to be quite industrial/modern/contemporary, may I suggest something like the below sofa, as it’s sleeker and not as bulky for the space. Of course, I’d recommend styling it up with some bright cushions (in keeping with which ever scheme you choose). I love that you’ve bought the Yellow throw to match with your art work and think this works great, so I’d bring a little more of the colour in to your space through other accessories. Maybe a cool geometric style bright plant pots and other small accessories to generally just add more colour to the space. A rug would also be a great addition to your lounge space, as your wood flooring although gorgeous is quite dark something lighter would help to create a more airy space. I've attached an image below to see the type of style rug I'd go for. (Of course not that big though!) A lick of paint on the feature wall could also transform your space, as you've gone for quite a dark colour. Something lighter, even just a lighter shade of what is already there, I'm sure would have a huge impact on the lighting of the room.
