I had 2 dark brown similar sofas at our old house in a small living room but it never felt dark. our wall colour was chic shadow and we had all beige and grey textiles (rug/curtain/cushions/throw) I think all the white wood helped to keep it light. the lovely high victorian ceilings helped too. So it completely depends what kind of room you’re working with but definitely possible to not let the sofas overwhelm the light.

Lovely, cosy room. I don’t think you need to do much, unless you want a complete change. I would remove the wallpaper and just paint the wall the same as the rest of the room, although panelling would look amazing. I don’t think you need a rug as you already have carpet. Maybe some new cushions?

Hi Ruth, have you got the budget to employ a good decorator? I used to do all my own decorating, but worsening osteoarthritis meant I could no longer do it myself. The chaps who painted my home were amazing, they just ran the brush along the top of the wall where it joined the ceiling and it was perfect. I then realised how rubbish I was at decorating! Just a thought. I think choose the sofas first, as has already been suggested, something that you love and is comfy, and then you can decorate around that. The green sofa idea is fab and it goes with so many colours. Navy is nice too. If you prefer a quieter shade how about a charcoal grey velvet or a nice tan leather?

Have you considered a selection of shelves and art to make the tv less prominent? Wooden panelling is very popular now and would make a nice feature on a very plain wall. You could do a section from floor to ceiling and include shelves for displaying items. The tv could be mounted on the panelling.
