We have recently moved house and acquired a garden in need of lots of love! Fences have just been replaced (neighbours/shared fences, not solely ours) and we’ve had an extensive area of decking removed at time. Under half the decking closet to the house we found a patio… of sorts. On closer inspection, the patio seems to have been levelled, badly, because the thin layer of levelling can be pulled away to reveal pavers - another patio underneath! (See circled areas in the photo). The whole area sinks very slightly in the middle and we can see some of the pavers are very uneven. To complicate things further, we just had a tree removed as it was too close to the house, and wondering if we might get some further movement to the ‘patio’ over the next few years and so we’re best to leave the ground (London clay, joys) to settle first.
We’re also thinking of having some raised beds made out of sleepers, in parallel to the raised patio (see pic for our inspiration).
We are considering what to do with this area! As this cement patio comes right up to the house we are conscious of not raising the level beyond the DPC. Remove the ‘levelling layer’, remove the pavers underneath and then lay a new patio? Or just stick something on top of this, as it is? Or something else?
