Help! 1960’s detached

We’ve got planning to extend the front ground floor of our house, but our architects designs are so basic and ugly! (2 options attached)

I’d love some inspiration please (existing front ground right room is already in place)

so just the ground front left room (2m extention) and the porch (1.2m)

In my opinion the pitched roof doesn’t work. These houses were often built with flat roofed porches which was in keeping with the regimented proportions. To me a pitched roof addition feels like you have only pulled it into the 90s and if you had a modern flat roof it could feel sharper, more modern and less suburban.

I’m also not keen on the changing rhythm of the windows……

In my opinion simple slim casement windows with no top openers suit this type of house well.

Pick a colour that complements the neighbours, paint the wood. Put some trellis on the wood, paint same colour and grow a flowering climber there. Move the shrubs somewhere else (I like to not get rid of stuff that can be used elsewhere) perhaps off to the right and make the border into a more defined shape (a curve would look nicer. Fill with lavender and rosemary and pop weed suppressant and decorative bark or stone (bark is cheaper).

Hey Anthony, There's a few options here: You make an open plan kitchen, where the current office actually becomes the dining area. I feel like your living room would be quieter anyway so move the office there. Another option is to live there for a while and see if a side extension is really worth it. See where your family/kids prefer to spend time, and you'll know better if it's worth improving/enlarging a particular space. I don't know what the current upper right corner is used for in your case, but it's often a dead space or just a place to store junk, so in the long run it might be worth converting it to an internal area. If you connect the current living and dinning with bifolds that space risks becoming just an access corridor. On the toilet ideally you would swap it to face the hall, although not sure how much headroom there is under stairs. Office & Living Room open plan - Do you really want to lose that living room? The front gable built by others seems to really suit this house and clearly a precedent has been set so planning shouldn’t be a problem. But currently the upstairs isn’t big enough for what you are planning so you have to add to the downstairs as well…. I suspect the property will increase in size substantially which throws up problems of: is there enough budget? Will the garage be in the way of a rear extension? Given the new square footage will any of the old rooms (such as the living room) be undersized? You might look at the public access part of the planning portal on your local Borough Councils website. You should be able to look up neighbours planning applications and gain inspiration from their plans. You might also consider if moving the stairs or building a garage on the side driveway helps achieve a better layout and garden.

I agree with Jonathan, the pitched roof doesn't work. I don't see an issue with a garage that protrudes at the front, but it needs to be beautiful. This image isn't of a protruding gargae but it does show a bold exterior with warm materials which I think suits really well.

We had a garage at the front of our property a few years ago and we splurged on a cedar wood garage door, it looked fabulous. I would also invest in a super wide front door to balance the garage.
