Smaller Homes Design Dilemma Living Rooms

Help with setting up the living room and placement of sofas.

Moving into a new house and just moved the piano on the ground floor which is an open plan space. The piano ends up covering the only full wall we have (and normally would have been the ideal place for a couch). I am a bit flummoxed as to how to set up the living room in the remaining space between the piano and the kitchen as there are a lot of wall niches on one side and boiler room door on the other. I have provided the floor plan and some photos of the rooms from different angles. We plan to remove the entrance door to this room as it currently feels a bit awkward. Open to any ideas. Thanks!

I would consider to change the piano to Compact one to get more space (if it don't have sentimental value), place dining place near kitchen then set the living near window, it easier to change furniture than custom house

The grand piano can be rented to local music academy

Thanks Devyra, however the piano is not only sentimental but is key as we have a pianist at home and is needed for everyday practice. To keep the flow of the open space we did not want it to be in the middle, thus the current position is what I believe is the best for now. We will have to figure out the seating around the piano. The area to the left of the kitchen is the dining room. The space between the kitchen and the piano is where I am thinking of setting up the living room.

I think I would try tweaking the layout slightly. Try the sofa flat in the middle of that wall and paint the radiator in the wall colour. Angle one chair in the corner of the room facing the sofa, move the other along and put the smaller table under the other with the lamp on (Art would need to move slightly). I think a tall plant always adds life to a room (other side of sofa to what's shown). I'm not sure if I'm right in saying you don't like the wallpaper? If you don't you could look at Cole and son cow parsley, it comes in a warmish grey Which might be worth trying. If you like that one can look for cushions and a rug to complement. Would you consider a coffee table or larger footstool for the room? Something round could work. Is the inside of the fire just plastered?

My parents living room has a very similar dimension and layout as yours. The questions I’ve are if the double door area has high traffic? Do you watch a lot of TV? My parents place layout is two three seater sofa facing each other in front of the fireplace with a TV console on the wall opposite, and bookshelves on both sides of the fireplace. My father watches a lot of TV in the evening whilst my mum doesn’t and she uses the space during the day to read and receive friends. The sofas facing each other creates a more formal space for conversation. For your space, I personally won’t have two sofas but one sofa with two armchairs, maybe mid century style on the side to the conservatory. For the conservatory, I could see both rectangular, square or circular dining table work. It depends on your lifestyle again. For example if you regularly have a lot of people for dinner, then a circular might be better. Whilst if normally, you only have less than 4, I might go for rectangular or square. As it allows portion of the table to have a vignette of magazines, candles and vases / plants. I’ve a 6 people dining table and mostly just two of us. So we use it for coffee, reading, more plants and books on one end. If you’d like to spend a lot of time in the conservatory, I’d incline to add seatings like 1 or 2 armchairs, a little sideboard or table to put a lamp to give different lighting level. Again very much depend on what your lifestyle is.

Thank you all so much for your replies! Yes, we were thinking of having the more casual relax/Tv area as one section. I was struggling with the seating for the front window area but I very much like the ideas of the poufs and ottomans. We have a chair similar to the picture below which I tried in the area but it’s a weird shape and protrudes into the space awkwardly so I may have to put it somewhere else in the house… With regards to the heavy curtains -I really like the idea! But by a curved pole do you mean one that would bend again beyond the window frame? As the pole is now, I think the curtains would block a fair bit of light even when open. (We didn’t place it there but, again, it’s not the highest priority right now as there’s so much other work to do..) Again, thank you very much. When everything is moved in I’ll post a pic :)

Sure its important to pianist,

then i recommend to install custom camouflage door with wall panel use the wall with boiler door as media wall with the help of swivel tv mount and place the sofa across it

These are the approximate dimensions, a first possibility is to switch the dining and living room but lose out on some space. the second possibility is to move the pinao in the middle space which then creates sort of an obstruction and defies the point of open space.

Thanks Sarah L, I agree this would have been a good choice but the room on the left of the kitchen (where you have placed the piano in your image) is a new part of the house with a beautiful skylight - if that is used for the piano then no one else will use that room and its a bit of a shame to just make it a practice room. That is why the initial idea was dining room.

Another possibility is to do something like this, keep the sofa perpendicular to the small space between the entrance door and boiler room door, facing the piano and zone that as the living room..but that means people will enter the room and find themselves right in the middle of a seating area which may be awkward.

A piano on the only full wall is such a classic puzzle! Placing the sofa perpendicular (facing the piano) actually works really well. To fix the awkwardness of walking straight into the seating area, just place a slim console table behind the sofa. It creates a natural entryway zone (perfect for keys or a lamp) and acts as a divider.

To make sure you don't block the boiler door or the entrance, try scanning the space with the Beavom app. You can virtually test different sofa sizes and positions in 3D to find the perfect flow before moving anything! Good luck!
