Can we improve our first-floor layout for this extension?

We’re planning a two-storey extension and would really appreciate some advice on how to make the best use of the additional first-floor space.
Currently, we have 4 bedrooms (one with an ensuite) and a family bathroom.
The plan is to extend the first floor by 2.5m across the full width of the house (the ground floor will extend 3.5m).
Our initial ideas for the first floor are:
1. Create a larger master bedroom by combining Bedroom 2 with the current Bedroom 5, plus part of the rear extension
2. Extend Bedroom 6 into the new rear space
3. Relocate Bedroom 5 to the current bathroom location, extending it into the new space
4. Move the main bathroom into the extension, next to the resized Bedroom 2 (likely taking a bit of space from it).
We’re wondering:
1. Is this the best way to use the space?
2. Are there smarter layout options we haven’t considered?
3. Any suggestions to improve flow, storage, or overall usability?

Comments (40)Hi, I suggest you move the mirrors up , at the level of the window because they are too low , with this you will create a hight of the room , the carpet it is a problem : 1: it keeps the dust in the house and 2: you can never have a clean room with it . I also suggest get some money put a wood floor and the radiator can be cut out , moved on the floor heating , then you can decide if you want or not to create a small place to sit at the window or the corner where your closet is a small table with a chair where you can rest and have also a make-up session . Move the curtains close to the level of the ceiling and try to find a fade coloured curtain that can create an accent in the room (just because you have a patter wall that does not mean everything in the house should have a patter as well) and i suggest a plant because it keeps the air clean even when you sleep . i can try to make you a design suggestion and see more of what i am writing you, but i will need some specific measurements of the room (height- distance from the wall to the window and to the corner and after to the door , i assume that is where the master-bedroom bath is . Comments (12)I'm not sure making the fireplace look heavier would be a good idea. However rather than fight the off centre I would work with it. Possibly wall hang the TV to the right of the fireplace it looks as if that would make it quite good for viewing from the sofa. Get a bigger rug which would still be off centred but would pull in/integrate the soa area more. I wouldn't put the TV in front of the window as the blockage of the view could feel negative and if the sun shines through during the day difficult to see TV without drawing curtains. What about a mirror above the fireplace you seem to have a window at each end of the space so a mirror could act like a third window reflecting light and giving weight to that are away from the TV. Comments (10)Chloe, I do love your idea and if the kitchen is big enough for you, I think it would great and work fairly well for you too. p.s great work with the cardboard cutouts! I may suggest switching the dining room and sitting room as I think the flow may be a bit better for you but without knowing you a little better (and your use of the space) that is hard to tell ..its really a personal choice. Try thinking how often you use each of the elements with in your cardboard room and imagine moving between the pieces. Is the plan to scale? Comments (7)Hi! Sounds like a fun project. I love a good farmhouse. Man about the house has given you some excellent suggestions for adding a shower in. It definitely seems to be just about moving the door into the bathroom and reconfiguring that space to be able to fit a shower in there as well. For the ground floor I'm wondering if moving the entrance to the side might be possible - just in front of the stairs and creating a hall that takes a slice off the back of the living room and joins up with your existing hall - so you basically get a bigger hall that includes the stair and the main entrance. That could then fit some bootroom type space in and coat hanging so it becomes a really useful space. Then I'm thinking you could make the porch element much wider, basically a single storey extension to the front, so that your living room pushes forward into the front garden. You will be able to get a lot more light in to the living room and will be able to just have the one door in from the hall so it becomes a much more usable living room. This would need planning permission and extensions to the front are more difficult to get approval, but this seems like a logical approach to improving the space for you.
