Yes agreed its very daunting - and you'll never get it spot on first time. I've only lived in my house 2.5 years and this is the 3rd time i've completely changed the lounge, the kitchen has been done twice, and the bedrooms twice also :) My latest inspiration for the lounge was a Tom Ford showroom, so i typed "tom ford interiors" into google and saw the pictures, that became the template and i just research the internet for similar items. Another great look for your place could be scandinavian design which is very bright and airy, there are a lot of pictures on this site if you type "scandinavian" in, and also these websites specialise in scandi accessories: www.scandinaviandesigncenter.com and www.finnishdesignshop.com . Just list out all the elements that will need to be looked and and work through them methodically: 1) layout, spacing and sizing of furniture, to include rugs 2) overall colour theme (2 or 3), to include furniture, carpets / rugs any wallcoverings and curtains / blinds) 3) lighting (yours looks good already) 4) accessories and decor 5) textiles such as cushions and throws keep the darker colours lower down if you want to place to look light and airy (such as rugs etc rather than painting walls dark colour) and use lots of mirrors if you want to add the illusion of space. But the number 1 tip from me is find a picture of a room you like and simply copy of much of it as you can.

I would recommend white painted walls. Add accessories that are colorful if you wish. You can change it anytime you want. Depending on the space, I would definitely add something like raw thick tree branch. You can then make some fairy doors on it in color. Interaction with a child making these doors :) I would also choose funky prints of animals over the decals. Or have some animal heads hung on the walls. Children loves cozy spaces canopy is the thin. I would recommend Numero 74. I love their range of colors and quality. Add some cool pillows. If you are into diy, make some. Paint on it, embroider, use different techniques to apply color and texture to the room. Have more than one lighting source: fairylights, floor lamp, etc. If you want something really cool: cover ceiling in polka dots. Don't paint it. You can cut out some cardpaper circles and stick it with blutack. Use different sizes one color rather than having different colors. Take it off when tired of it easily. I like the hamajima takuya vases, I find a lot of Japanese pottery is timeless, it goes equally well with antiques or contemporary themes, elegance is a prerequisite for a Japanese potter.

The space has a lot of potential. The first thing I would do is invest in a rug for the living/dining area, something not too bold and colourful, but also not too dark, a nice neutral colour, maybe a light grey. This is arguably the best thing you can do to create a more cosy feel. Another point that has already been mentioned, is that there a little bit of clutter, some kind of simple storage box that works with the colour theme would a a useful addition. When it comes to the lighting, painting that table white would make the room feel a little lighter and reflect the light rather than absorb it. Another tip for lighting is to opt for some blinds that allow for better light control rather than curtains. Wooden venetian blinds allow for precise light control and would suit your space perfectly, or for a more affordable option, you could try day & night roller blinds or dimout roller blinds.
