Huge Bathroom - what to do?

Hi guys,
I've read some great ideas in these forums, so I'm hoping you can help me! I've just purchased a large (for London at least) maisonette. The master floor comes with a VERY large bathroom. The previous owners had a PowerPlate and Multigym to the left and right of the Juliet balcony in this space.
I have no desire to recreate a gym in here, so I'm wondering - what else could I do with the space, aside from storing a clothes horse? :)
Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Comments (17)Update -- my plumber finally returned. Not sure what he did while here, but he told me again it wasn't working -- then he did some work on a radiator which had a small leak. We were having a long discussion about options on pumps, new showers, taps etc and I read out the installation guide and he tried it again, and suddenly it worked. It is bizarre as I don't know how many times i tried it previously. My friend who works in construction ALSO called earlier today and tried it several times to no avail. It must have been extremely stiff or perhaps the plumber realised some airlock whilst fixing the radiator since I think water pressure is much stronger since he went. Thanks for everyones help -- i learned lots on plumbing and a valuable lesson to take out the installation manuals myself and not trust that trades men know everything!!! Comments (18)I've been thinking about options to cover all basis and came up with this. To allow guests to use a bath/shower the ensuite would be shared. I added a wall in the master bedroom to divide it and add privacy so guests don't have to walk into the bedroom to get to the bath/shower. The upsides are that the ensuite is larger, includes a bath and shower and has more vanity room. Also, by diving the bedroom I can add sort of a walk-in wardrobe. The downsides are that there's only one bath/shower that has to be shared and guests have to walk through the walk-in wardrobe to get to it. Also, it reduces the size of the master bedroom but it's quite a long room anyway and it would cut out the light from the windows in the bedroom. Just had the builder to view the flat and here are some updates: builder said the soil pipe seems to be straight down, but could install a pump to flush it; although the estate agent said the pipe goes from external wall at the back of the flat. Not exactly sure who is correct. the budget is likely to go between 30k-35k. I also had a measure of the current bathroom dimension which is 1.67*2.13m. and the ceiling height is 2.56m. we'll probably change the bedroom wardrobe and free up some space as well......See More

10 years agolast modified: 10 years agoAh, London. I realize this is completely my daydream, but it's probably a good example of how one design choice helps to direct the rest.
First of all, I adore your city, and fell in love with some of the equine population there -- long story. So when you said "clothes horse," I was already going in that direction. For you, it might be something completely different that inspires you.
Anyway, functionally, I put a large apothecary cabinet along the far wall. While a Union Jack rug is probably complete cliché for you, I couldn't resist it with the cabinet and the blue Turkish towel. A quick search on Etsy brought me to the well-heeled crowd at the horse races -- I've lost the links after stepping away from my desk, sorry. I didn't find the perfect sepia horse mural for over the tub, but you get the idea.
The takeaway -- functional storage, and let your mind wander.

10 years agoHow about a striking colour on the walls? A rug and a bench in front of the window. There are indoor/outdoor rugs that can withstand weather, so they'll definitely be fine in a bathroom. But I'm pretty sure other rugs will work too, as long as you have good ventilation in there and don't get it soaking wet.

10 years agolast modified: 10 years agoGorgeous space! Definitely some art - canvas works well in humid environments. I agree totally with some large linen storage. You can use a colorful back panel to add interest, in addition to a boldly patterned rug. (I hear wool kilims make good bathroom rugs) Some seating might be good too. A quick sketch is attached.

10 years agoA larger tub would be my knee jerk thought. Then a skylight over the tub. Heaven. Also a funky antique mirrored armoire. I'm great at spending other peoples money.

10 years agolast modified: 10 years agoI like the bench, large rug and cabinet on wall to right idea and some beautiful plants.............the bench you can use for sure, and the rug, you can do yoga or some stretching exercises on! That's what I would do anyway.
OR you could build a little dry sauna area enclosure to the right of the window in that area!

10 years agolast modified: 10 years agoYou could do so much with this extra space!! Who says you can't enjoy the view from the bathroom.....lol! Make it luxurious by adding different textures (especially wood) and shapes with unexpected items. Totally agree about the armoire......the bigger the better! 10 years agoI second the faux fireplace idea that Lydia posted above! There's lots of different styles and colors. A friend of mine had one and it threw quite a bit of heat and made the room very charming and cozy. A relaxing bath by a fire? Hmmmm.....doesn't get any better than that!

9 years agoLarge Bathrooms are actually the biggest challenge we face in our showroom! so many customers come in with large spaces but not knowing what to do. One option is to have a large freestanding bath as the vocal point in the dead centre of the room, then fill the room out around it with storage areas and furniture. Another common solution is to create a bedroom/bathroom all in one space. This may even add value to your property!
