Comments (85)It looks great, I'm glad you and your daughter are so pleased and she has lots of room for friends over, playing etc. It can also be easily and cheaply adapted as she grows if she wants. My only criticism (if you can call it that) is that if not already your daughter may soon also want the desk to double up as a dressing table and therefore I think a mirror was a good idea but the memo board (which looks great) can always be moved as and when needed. (I thought i'd posted a comment on that previously but obviously not!). I might also add a desk light there for working during winter months. So which room next?!...See MoreFeature art wall
Comments (0)Natalia’s first home! It was such fun helping her to get the look she wanted. I was initially invited for a 2 hour consultancy session which took place before she moved in; we talked about decor, storage, window dressings, furniture layout, wardrobe design, accessories and an art wall. It’s amazing how much you can cover in a short time and when I left I know Natalia’s head was spinning… in a good way! Happily she called me back once she had the keys to the apartment and asked me to design the art wall which had now become the focus of her attention. Natalia showed me the website she had found… Desenio.com. She loved almost everything on it so I asked her to draw up a wish-list! Room layout This is a 1-bedroom apartment in a period property conversion. The lounge is rectangular in shape with a beautiful window in the long wall and the door to the hall on the other. The kitchen units run along one of the short walls and the art would be placed opposite. I took into consideration the size of the doors on the kitchen units and decided to balance this by choosing large format framed prints instead of smaller ones. We had discussed the furniture layout so I knew a sofa would be sitting in the corner of the room and I felt this ought to be integrated and become part of the design. Decorating We wanted the ‘wow’ factor to do this lovely property justice and it took only a little convincing from me for Natalia to use the dark coffee colour (Royal Academy Basilica) for the short walls and a warm white (Fleur Snow White) for the rest of the walls and ceiling. Both colours are available online from paint supplier ColourandPaint.com. During the Christmas holiday break Natalia got out the paint roller and did some DIY! She didn’t have a hammer though… oh dear, I feel a song coming on… so I took a few bits and pieces with me when it came time to hang the pictures. Affordable art This art wall came in at around £300 – and yes, it is ‘wow-ing’ all Natalia’s friends. We were both pretty pleased with our handiwork too! With grateful thanks to photographer Christian Payne aka @Documentally. And thank you Desenio and ColourandPaint for being so supportive. See my Houzz profile for more photos of this project. Natalia had never used an interior designer before - see what she says about the experience....See MoreHow do we find out artwork style?
Comments (5)I think we're touching a very broad subject here. Art can be many things. Not necessarily paintings what you put on the wall. For example I like anything floral and botanical and appreciate the work that's gone into making or growing something, wether it's a beautiful climbing rose, a wood carving, hand painted water colour or a hand embroidered cushion. My hubby in the other hand likes the inner workings of engines, computers and anything mechanical, to him this is art. So you can imagine the eclectic mix of stuff we have in our house:) Good place to start is have a browse at sites that sell prints like Art.co.uk or Allposters, there are thousands of images but you might be able to narrow it down to things you like/dislike. Alternatively shop around, if you see something you love then take a photo or better still get it! If you have a local art college you could also take a visit there. I'm sure lots of students would be happy to sell their pieces, you'd get something original at the fraction of the price of an art gallery plus you may even be able to commission someone for something unique for yourself. I might be a bit biased as I went to art college myself and could rant on for ages on this subject but I've hoped to have helped a little....See MoreArts and Craft hallway panelling
Comments (6)I totally agree with Sonia - houses like that are built to outlast us. The wood is fighting against the butter coloured floor and stark white walls. Sonia's carpet choices are great. For the walls, you definitely should avoid stark white and you can either soften them down to a more beige hue or go bolder and make them gleam with a dull yellow like F&B Sudbury Yellow, which changes with the light. I think it's a great opportunity to have fun and do something out of the ordinary. You could almost experiment and fill in some of the panels with a bold wallpaper. At most, if you can't live with all of the wood (but give it a chance!) you could maybe whitewash the beams and paint the doors - it doesn't have to be all or nothing. I'd have fun with it - not many people get the chance to live in such a characterful home!...See MoreMark
