What should I do with the alcoves?

I've decided what to do with the main feature. The chimney will have a textured finish, host a log burner, and have a 3D piece of art above. A recessed eyeball light will highlight it all.

The alcoves however, I'm lost on.

I know I don't want shelving - too fussy -but that's about it.

Aww these are pretty amazing just as they are and I'd leave them as is. If you REALLY wanted to do something might it be possible to set them on hairpin legs (like these: http://www.theironmill.co.uk/online-shop/4583956081 ) and make 2 fab side tables?

Oh dear god why would you artex over a fireplace!? If you have a period property with the original fireplace - keep it! You are lucky! I curse the previous owners of my house for removing the original fireplaces.

Hi Phil, So you already have a picture to put in the left alcove? I would then recommend to have same size picture in the right alcove and in same/similar frame. In this case the actual picture can be anything that suits your taste: photograph, painting, colourful, black and white, depends what you like. Good quality frame and matching both sides in size, would create the elegant look. With best wishes,

Hi. Is the tv comfortable at that viewing height? I'd lower it, put the sideboard (with a lamp, flowers/stems etc) in the other alcove and have a tv unit below the tv. personal opinion only re the sofa but I'm not a fan of things blocking things even if they're not used, could you add a chair as below? i might also paint the pipes in both of the wall colours so they blend in and I'd lower the floral sculpture just a few inches so it's not touching the picture rail. im not sure if there's room to move the side table the other side of the sofa but if there's is I would centre the keyboard in the bay and add a tall plant where the table is.

The old bricks are beautiful, are you sure you want to put a textured finish over them ?

How about texuring the whole wall and adding sconces in the alcoves;)

The picture I uploaded is has for some reason been cropped.

I considered an exposed brick fireplace, but these are only common brick, in poor condition and poorly pointed.

Wall scones. Good idea.

We had the same look in our last house which was Victorian. On the left alcove we had built a contemporary shelving unit that was staggered ie so it was lower near the chimney and got higher at the end. Was great for displaying artwork, vases, CDs etc without being too boring.
On the right, I had a simple hall table with a huge vase of flowers on it - which also doubled as a laptop desk.

I've put light boxes like these on a few jobs before. These ones are set a little further out than the chimney so the tv could be inset but you get the idea.
