Need help with sofa and picture advice please!

Hi, posting again on another advice issue please.....

We have just had our new sofa delivered, am just a tad bit excited about it :) have completely decorated this room. I am really trying to get the space in my house looking good and right. Can I please have some advice on the layout of cushions for my sofa. This is the first time I have ever had a corner suit :) and what do I do with the walls. I have also put some pics of existing cushions and pictures I have. But think the cushions will prob need replacing. As always, advice is greatly appreciated, and will be taken on board. Thank you for any time you are able to offer me here.

heres the deal the couch is modern, and your tables are traditional. You might want a round table instead of square, group your art on the walls, add a arc lamp and some patterned modern pillows. and some more colors to lighten it up a bit :)

@Milfordmaid: thanks a lot for the suggestion. Lime green is sounding very nice to me. What did you mean by smaller bits of pillar box red? What do you think of the rug? I actually had a re-think and was thinking maybe I should leave out the rug. Just to use bright cushions, lampshades, and some decorative accessories combining the cushion colours and sofa colours and a bit of cream. What of the wall art?

For the cushions you've chosen, I would buy modern sofa with clean lines in gray colour. The best place for sofa is the wall opposite the chimney breast and you can build the shelves on each side like on one of the pictures. Smaller sofa or two armchairs can be placed against the wall opposite the window. I would open the fire place and place there some wood blocks.

Hi albricci, You can really transform a sofa by introducing different accent colours and patterns through decorative cushions. Your pinkish-purple sofa will work perfectly with pops of fresh greens and soft blues. Echo these colours within other accessories around the space such as groups of glass vases and ornaments to create a cohesive flow. If you are open to painting your wooden desk area and wall panelling, you could try a contemporary grey tone such as Dulux Night Jewels 4 in a durable Eggshell finish (being sure to sand and prime the surface before painting). For the wall colours you could retain a fresh crisp Absolute White or a blush tone such as Dulux Soft Montelimar 4. Cool. Well tomorrow i am going to start on the walls, get the lamp i.put up in the link earlier, and a load of black frames for the wall. Then get some nice cheerful prints to go in.

I would love to be able to afford someone to come round and tell me exactly what to get! Just want it to look really good!!!!

Hi, this is as far as I have gotten today. Really pleased with the lamp, but unsure if I have it angled correctly :) I am sorry, I have very low confidence when it comes to putting things together. I am really struggling with what to do with the walls. Sizes, colours etc... Stood in the shops earlier, picking things up, putting them back, going back to them, going to something else. If anyone can please advise on exactly how to put it together, I would appreciate it incredibly. I am just trying to make my home really comfortable, and to be really happy with it. Fed up of decorating, not liking it, re-decorating, and spending a fortune on different accessories and then giving them away.....

I would go with the yellow and grey cushions .You can always change them according to season .

Genevieve, I have a couple of yellow cushions, so can easily get a yellow and grey one to sit in between them. I do like the city picture, so will try and get something along those lines. The coffee table I brought I can't part with, cost quite a bit, and is a good piece of furniture. I will need to try and get this to work with the sofa.

Abbeyjean, I only brought the lamp and the one yellow block cushion cover in felt today. Pictures is where I am really, really struggling. I don't know what size to do, I do like the saloon style. But this is what I can't get my head around on what to buy.

Is it possible to move the aquarium table so that end of the room feels more open and spacious? Right now the sectional is basically sitting on that piece of furniture.

The throw draped over the arm? Try it draped in the corner of the sectional instead....that can make a huge impact to have it right. You will need to play a bit to get it just right. A few pillows can be layered in front of it, too.

Bring home a few pieces and prop them on the back of the sectional and post back before you pound nails in the wall. Normally it is suggested that the art takes up 2/3 of the space it is filling. Measure your space and take that number with you when you shop.

Canvases will work well in this room.......find some with the same colors in them and then they will coordinate just fine. THEN you can add in more pillows to go with the art, too. Aim for some yellow in each one.

Abbeyjean, In regards to the table with the fish tank on, I was considering moving it to the left hand side of the TV, but would need to be at an angle, then the tall unit where the fish tank table is....

I have taken a photo of the other side of the room. as you can see, there is not a lot of room, trying to get everything in this room spaced right! Argh! It's a nightmare. And I know people will say change the furniture, but we just don't have that sort of money :( the two lighter units are awaiting to be stained.

See I was thinking canvases, am torn between that and picture frames. So I am looking at filling up about 2/3, is that height as well as width?

OH! Good question about height and width and 2/3! I would think it should come close to the same proportion for height. I suppose something long and skinny COULD work if it had all the right colors.......but avoid the temptation of hanging it too high then. Aim for the 2/3 to cover the length of the space and see what CALLS YOUR NAME. It will be there. I have found art at Target and Shopko and Hobby Lobby.......furniture stores have some, too.....places you may not normally look.

Please excuse the clutter, we currently have no kitchen as that has been completely ripped out. I am waiting for my husband to actually get it done!!!!!

I have to admit that I am not a fan of angled furniture.....especially furniture that has the open spaces like this piece. Will that shelving until fit on the tv wall if it is flat on the wall? Then we can work with the decor there if I know it will fit on the wall.

I know it is not fun moving shelving, but also wonder if the taller unit would work on the shorter wall it is near??? That would give the tv a little breathing space with one side empty and then the other unit right on the wall. I think I would really like that taller skinnier shelf on the wall that it seems to fit on.

I am looking through the doorway shown.....and see a blank wall......would the aquarium table work there at all? There just seem to be too many smaller pieces of furniture in this space and with that piece gone, a floor lamp would work soooo well there. The floor lamp will also fill in the wall area behind the sectional some, too.

No, I did have that wall up the other week asking for advice, and that was mentioned, it doesn't fit. I am slowly angling it more and more towards the other wall though (hubby likes it angled) the tall unit, see what you are saying in regards to breathing room for the TV, but then you wouldn't be able to see the unit from the sofa?There is no blank wall - I am wondering if you are looking at the curtains, which if you are, that is the back door to the garden?

It is ok if the tall unit is not seen by the couch, unless it has very special decor you want appreciated by everyone in the space. Is that what is on it now?

The blank wall is where I believe you suggested the tall unit should be turned too?

Opposite the window is the picture taken from the back door. So part of the sectional, the doorway, the blankish wall that the tall skinny unit is next too. Does that make sense? :)

Hiya flair lighting :) I have had quite a few people suggest this, but my hubby is really against the idea. But..... he is working Saturday, I am off, as this is my project and the kitchen is his, I will see if I can get away with it! Houzz is going to get me into so much trouble with him lol :) But, so many people have suggested it, will try..... :)

First plan, dimensions do not work, sofa would not fit along that wall.

Second plan, the shelving unit is 42 half " long and that wall is 33" long.

Hi abbyjean, sorry didn't reply, work has gone mad, and looks like I will be working all today as well as opposed to doing the living room :(

Flair lightings suggestions is moving either the shelving unit or fish tank unit under the TV, and then moving the other bits of furniture around it. Hopefully I will get some time to do it! Will post pics if I get round to it :)

That is a free standing fireplace? That changes everything! Of course, try the larger pieces under the tv for balance in the room. Who knows....maybe the fireplace will owrk in your bedroom? Dining room?

Hiya, sorry, been a very manic weekend! I have an idea with the fireplace, we are going to build onto it, make it wider. Think that would work, then the other unit flat against the wall.

Did go out and get some pics, let me know what you think :) not 100% sure that the bike one works. And the city one, maybe too city if that makes sense.... The metal one on the sofa, is something I already have, but I do quite like it.

I love all the art you have chosen for this room....and the bit of yellow in them totally work. I was nervous about the size of a few, so grouping is a good idea. I think the largest one can work alone and the other two can maybe stack?
