Would you dare to paint your ceiling?

Most people forget that the ceiling is the fifth wall of a room and can add as much personality as a feature wall.

Coloured ceilings can look really cool and change the look of a room, but would you paint or wallpaper yours? If you would, what room would you go for?

Yes, and I did. My bedroom ceiling is a pale sky blue, beautiful to wake up to every morning.

My husband trusts me and prefers I make all those decisions. That said I always ask his opinion on large pieces. If I left it all to him he would lose interest before finishing! Design is so not his thing. But then I'm not interested in documentaries on outer space or Lego.... Best we stick to our own interests I think! ;)

Number 6 would also be my preference. How high are the ceilings though? Does the light fitting also need to be moved slightly so it zones that area? ( hard to tell from pics).

I know this is an old post, but I thought I’d add that saying that Southern Europeans have their elderly live with them has not been my experience. My Italian cousin has her elderly mum live with her and it is driving her round the bend. Her mum has always been a difficult and demanding woman and even more so now. She is not doing it out of love, but duty. Another cousin has arranged for 24 hr care in her mother’s home as she has dementia and is bed bound. She confessed that it’s costing an absolute fortune but she has a restaurant to run and does not feel she can care for her mum full time. My mother was a very demanding and controlling woman and I was her carer as a child whenever she was unwell. When she started to develop dementia in her 80s I did consider having her live with me, but she had poor mobility and could not manage the stairs to access the only loo in my pretty tiny house. Also I don’t think I could have coped emotionally. Plus she didn’t want to! After several falls and leaving the grill on all night, my siblings and I decided a Care home would be best for her. We are talking about a person with dementia, very poor mobility and double incontinence. We found her a lovely care home a few minutes away and within weeks she had settled in well and even made a best friend. Seeing them holding hands was so sweet! The staff were lovely and I felt very welcome there. My sister loved it there so much she started to work there. Mum flourished in the home as she had company, good food and good care and our relationship improved until she passed away 2 years later.

I've painted some ceilings in two homes, usually a pale blue or aqua, I always smile when I see them :))

I've already been back, lol, couldn't wait. But I've been very busy painting two old dressers that I put off doing last summer, so I can feel a bit virtuous (sort of). I see lots of the bulbs we planted in the fall pushing up, I hope that the squirrels have left me enough for a good show in a couple weeks. :)

I painted the ceiling of a long hallway dark eggplant and strategically added small spotlights. The 2 walls were white where we created an art gallery. In the evening the spots lit the artwork and the ceiling looked like sparkling stars. We painted the perpendicular wall at the end lime green (a nice lime green, not neon) for a little interest during the day.

I painted our bedroom ceiling high-gloss, candy-apple red. The walls are an off white. I still need to repaint the walls as it is nearly impossible to cut in a ceiling without getting the paint on the walls!

I painted my family room in BM's Sweet Bluette, but then thought the angled beams (as in Charlene's example above), just looked too weird, so I chickened out and repainted them in White Diamond. Kinda regretting it now....

I'm not sure warmth is the correct term, but it does create interest and happiness when I look at it. Who wouldn't prefer to wake up to a beautiful blue rather than a stark white? It's kind of like a big smile in the morning.

Here's an older pic, click to enlarge. I have a custom Sherwin Williams color. Because my room is creamy white I went with a bit more color. When choosing a color pick something you like and then consider going a bit lighter, it will change during the day.

We personally prefer paint ceilings ... It's much easier to change over wallpaper if you don't like it. As a painting contractor we have been painting several ceilings different colors lately. It's a nice way to change the room up. :)

It's hard to determine with the lighting. But your custom ceiling color is reminiscent of these three colors
SW tradewinds (though this is a little greener)
SW sleepy blue
SW upwards
Those are three lovely deeper gray blues
If someone wanted a deeper aqua blue then maybe

I also love these, I used one on kitchen ceiling and the other on porch and screen porch, but I'd use it inside house too.

I ALWAYS paint the ceiling a color or wallpaper it. A room is totally unfinished if it has a big white ceiling.

I've thought about painting my dining room ceiling a different colour (like the picture below.) But I don't know if It would turn out good. So I will just stick with plain old white right now (:

You wouldn't want a stronger color to feel as if it were coming down on you, it would all depend on the room and how high the ceilings are, how much light, etc., whether or not a deeper color would work.

Thanks for replying! The ceiling has a maximum height of 11 and a minimum of 8 feet. I plan on painting the walls a bright white.

Yes! I think the height of the ceilings will play a role in determining the color and design of the ceiling but a feature ceiling can add so much glamour and character to a room! I would personally prefer the change to be subtle and not bold (because I don't want my attention to draw upwards and away from my pretty furniture immediately). I would love beautiful mouldings like the ones here but if they don't already exist, a printed wallpaper may be a more affordable alternative.

I would love to paint my ceilings!! I like to keep my walls neutral so adding color in the ceiling would be my dream. I especially love painted wood ceilings, just enough rustic and fun.

I once saw a red dining room with a lemon yellow ceiling, and it was beautiful! Sometimes a light pink looks nice on the ceiling of a bedroom, bathroom, or nursery. I plan to paint the ceilings of my current home sky blue to bring in the outdoors, and I plan to have white walls.

Love some of these images above and it has got me thinking! Do you think it would work if you do not have high ceilings? Just a bit worried it will have the effect of the ceiling looking even lower then it is???? Any experience of???? Thank you.

My cousin has a cottage-style house with fairly low ceilings, which he painted black while painting the walls and trim white and staining the floors a dark wood tone. The black paint, which had a matte or flat texture, made the ceilings appear to be farther away or higher. The white crown molding around the rooms also made the ceilings look recessed or higher. I also had a friend who had her kitchen ceiling painted black. Her carpenter then faced the ceiling with lattice and added wood trim over the seams, which he painted a charcoal black, a very dark grey. For crisp and bright contrast, he painted the crown molding, doors, and window trim white. The effect with light lemon yellow walls and white cabinets was wonderful.

To Lily Choi: I love your picture of the white living room with the bay window at the end. I would like to know if the molded ceiling was achieved by a white-painted tin ceiling, intricate wood carving, plaster, or molded wall paper. I love the subtle pattern and tone-on-tone effect that enhances the rest of the décor.

I wouldn't dare. I think it can look great, but I'm not brave enough. I'd actually love to wallpaper a ceiling but again I'd be too scared.

I'm deliberating on this at the moment. I want to be brave and go for it but I'm worried about leaving the walls white as I have a big dog who likes to come in and shake herself off after being outside! I can't picture coloured walls AND a coloured ceiling but maybe I'm wrong?

I like to reflect colour on some ceilings especially if there is crown moulding (coving) which kind of frames it up. Especially bathrooms and children's rooms where l would also add soft clouds, luminous stars or anything that would make them happy. I also like to paint a dark coving around some white ceilings in a room with dark furniture or flooring.
