What could we do with our hall...?

We've recently moved into our new home, a flat, with a dining room, kitchen, sitting room & bathroom. Each room is leading off the hall.
We have decorated our Sitting Room & Dining Room, but struggling for an idea of what to do? Could anyone advise?

Small dark space, so not white. Search "Stable Conversion, Dorset" on Houzz uk. This lady has serious interior design expertise< and she says small dark spaces should be embraced with dark colours and bold patterns. I so agree. Be careful of dark red though, can look a bit womb-like!

Yes I'm sure it would effect the resale value/saleability. But if you get 20 years of enjoyment (for example) out of a bigger hallway, does it matter? Just consider where you're guests will go to the loo when they pop in for a coffee

We have also just installed our diy-kitchens kitchen and are very happy with the results. Like you, we need to maximise the storage space and awkward layout and could do so with the wide range of cabinet sizes available. It probably took us a total of a week full time to design it properly (= a few weekends a month spread over 3 months), but this included changing the whole layout of electric cables & sockets & gas and water pipes and a toilet waste pipe running through the kitchen. You have to be methodical with designing a kitchen but diy-kitchens do have a guide to planning a kitchen and working out what layout suits you best. We did the fitting on the weekend which also took 3 weeks (including some clever fitting to get access to the meters and stop cock), but it meant we could maximise the storage space. For about 20 carcasses and end panels, plinths etc but not including appliances we spent £7k on solid wood painted shaker range Linwood.

I agree with your friend that travertine will be a nightmare to keep clean - too many nooks and crannies for dirt to nestle into! I love porcelain tiles, they are tough and so easy to clean, quick hoover and a mop. I have them in a dark grey slate look a like In my kitchen. They come in so many forms from wood effect through to all the stone effect finishes. Worth going to a good tile store and have a good look around. Bring the door with you so you can colour match. i think any of the F&B beige neutrals will look good on the walls. I particularly Purbeck Stone and Skimming Stone. I’m not sure if grey is right with the cashmere doors, you need something warmer perhaps?

I agree - this house is true to its period. You could spend a fortune creating a different look but why? Take up a lot of that block paving and plant a garden. You’ll get a lot more pleasure from that than grey cladding or whatever. With the added bonus that when you look out through your large windows, you’ll actually see what you spent your money on.

For the wall I would go for a neutral grasscloth to create a clean look with the white woodwork. I would add a shelf above the radiator and a statement mirror. For the shelf you could use a reclaimed marble mantel or something with some interest, like piece of solid wood with lots of grain showing. In the other area, I would remove the demilune and replace the art with a full length modern piece. Finish the look with a modern gold chandelier and metallic accessories. Hope this helps.

If something is tall and narrow then you want to pull the ceiling down by optical illusion. If it is very tall I would install a picture rail and bring the ceiling colour down the walls to the picture rail. I did this and now I find I want to put a wide hanging along one wall of my hallway so it is now practical as well as creating an optical illusion. Another way of achieving this is the dado rail at about 4 foot high. Then you can use two shades of the same colour the darker one at the bottom and the lighter one above. Richard Rumbelow's suggestions are another way of achieving this optical illusion. Your photograph suggests it is a Victorian building originally so these ideas would be in harmony with that.
