Future Houzz: Where did you want to live when you were growing up?
Comments (20)I'd say we all want to live in that lovely house we passed whilst on the way to go brambling with a jam jar in our hand and high hopes of a good day. Maybe it was the gates, or the gravel driveway that appealed, and it even had stone pillers and Georgian windows . And I'd wait and stare, and wait and stare curious about who lived there and hoping they'd drive out allowing me a quick glimpse of another world. Them. Then I'd feel ashamed stood there in my jumble-sale-new clothes, bothered that perhaps someone might come out and ask me what was I doing. I learnt it was a very rich person home, a shipbuilder who owned a shipping fleet and I wanted to copy him, if he could do it- then so could I. So that man and that lovely house blighted my life for the best, and it still does. I love this house and stop outside it whenever I pass by. I'm heart broken, and I'm a big strong man and big strong men are not allowed to cry. That adopted house is my comfort blanket, my home, and I go to sleep and it becomes mine. This is my lounge, this my garden, this gate is mine, and please come in when you go brambling. Don't walk on by, share it with me, you can adopt upstairs or the fireplaces, or ceiling coving and florals, I won't mind....See MoreHouzz Call: Amazing UK homes!
Comments (6)This small,l two-room flat in Brighton&Hove, has undergone a complete renovation, originally untouched since 1974, walls have been removed and re-positioned, kitchen moved - just about everything that could be done to squeeze as much out of the limited space. A couple of shots showing the chaos of renovation! And now a few 'After' shots. In fact the flat recently won, for it's Architect/designer duo, a 'Highly Commended' in the Sussex Heritage, architecture awards....See MoreHave you been inspired by design outside of the UK?
Comments (14)I spend a lot of time with my career travelling and spend a lot of time in hotels. I would like to think my style in international 5 star hotel but it is more Next or Marks and Spencer in reality. I am a big fan of letting in light and Scandanavian style and liefstyle. I plan a lot of work on my home next year to get rid of the British lots of rooms and opening up rooms and letting in light. If I were to sum up what I have learned: 1. Dutch - keep windows clear and let people in the street look in and admire what you have. If you have it flaunt it. 2. Estonia - syle costs nothing and less is more. 3. Denmark - wood in the house can look good. Brits have far too much honey varnished pine still around - take sandpaper to it and lighten or paint it. 4. USA - I would say most of their houses are 'dated' but garden landscaping is top notch. Use lots of evergreens, good quality hard landscaping and the rest works well. 5. South Africa - use colour: blocks of primary colour work really well....See MoreWhat's happened to the Houzz UK home page???
Comments (4)Thanks for the tips; I stopped using the US site when it changed to this layout because: I now need two extra clicks (Stories > Latest from Houzz) to find the general feed of stories or, on my 'home page', I have to scroll and search for the stories hidden between the photos. If my 'personalised home page' shows mostly what I choose to see, how will I stumble across interesting ideas, decor etc that I would never have thought of, broaden my horizons, be exposed to new things? Over-personalisation is a bubble of insulation from new ideas. I will try to become accustomed, although this feels like a step backward....See More- 10 years ago
