Chopping boards - wooden or plastic?
In the world of chopping boards there are two main competing kinds - wooden and plastic.
Most wood-made things have a charm and warmth to them, but I'm not always convinced that when washed they are as clean as plastic, though that's just me! Plastic can be more flexible in terms of colour, if you're the colourful kind.

Comments (40)I never, ever change mine. I use a butcher block and a huge thick wooden cutting board, only taking care to keep my fruits from suddenly tasting like onions or garlic. Studies have shown that a wooden cutting board is naturally resistant to bacteria, so I scrape and then wash mine off with soap and water after use. All this absurd paranoia about cleanliness is the product of marketing, not science, and the supposedly more sterile plastic ones are actually much better petri dishes for bacterial growth, which is why they must be cleaned and disposed of regularly. Comments (17)LTS you really shouldn't get a huge gap, it's not thick like a real wood floor or engineered flooring. It's a nice thin linoleum that glues to the sub floor. Therefore, you wouldn't really call it a gap, it's a tiny little space if any that you can then run your caulking around if needs be to tidy it. You definitely don't need beading, that's over kill. We've got a solid wood floor in the lounge that was laid after the skirting. Instead of beading, which I don't like, we've used shipping rope. Looks nice in an old cottage, but realise it's not for every house....See More

7 years agoWood certainly has a lot more to offer in both style and feel and practicality, you can not put a hot pan on to a plastic chopping board.
There are various designs of chopping boards you can produce with wood, as well as enhancing the natural beautiful grain and colour of the various wood species. The three species most ideal and compatible for a kitchen and food environment are Beech, Maple & Sycamore, The most beautiful and admired chopping boards are the ones that are also Spalted (showing scattered black lines) It is possible to get Spalted Beech, Spalted Maple & Spalted Sycamore, Also ripple back and birds eye Maple are exquisite.
