Color of the stain and wood species

Hi, I was wondering if you could please tell me the color and type of stain used on these shakes and if they are cedar ?If cedar, should you also share what variety of cedar please. Thanks so much!

The manufacturer of the shingle is Michigan Pre Stain and the shingle is a western red cedar rough sawn 18" shingle with a 6" exposure. The color is weathered coastal 003.

Was this done recently? I cannot find that color listed on their semi transparent stains on their website. It looks like Shelby gray or Silverstone are the closest matches.

I would say that almost any colour can go with wood but not all shades of any colour. It tends to work best with more complex / less intense colours. So sage green or grey/blue would go well, but lime green or bright blue wouldn't go so well. Sage or grey/blue are usually available in off-the-shelf Shaker style doors, which you have there. They also go well with other subdued colours, so you could have either of those mixed with cream or pale grey. I wouldn't mix blue and green as you seem to have in your picture above, though, but that might just be my tastes. Also, I was extremely underwhelmed by the quality of oak worktops. They use a fast growing species (there are several species of oak) which has very little character and often a rather nasty orange tint. I chose a birch worktop from B&Q instead, which is much cheaper and has an amazing 'tigers eye' effect once oiled - absolutely no regrets there, my worksurface looks way better than my brother's more expensive oak one. Lastly, I did a lot of research and chose Fiddes Hard Wax Oil to finish the worksurface. Do not skimp on the finish, I've known people who have and they've univerally regretted it. I am extremely pleased with the Fiddes, water can sit on there as long as it wants and never sinks in. I know 2 people who chose different worktop oil brands and they have to wipe water off within 5 minutes or it leaves a mark.

Annabel, I wouldn't paint something like window frames in a colour that's trendy at the moment. You're probably not going to do it again in 5 years and if not, they could look dated. However, if that's what you like... there are lots of nice greys out there - any paint shop has them at the moment, as they are so fashionable. Farrow&Ball has quite a few nice ones, e.g: http://www.farrow-ball.com/brassica/colours/farrow-ball/fcp-product/100271 For your house though... I think either a green or a smoked blue or purple could look great (and you could become a trendsetter in your neighbourhood). A neighbour has had her front door and frames done in Farrow&Ball Ball Green - she told me she had people knocking her door to ask the paint colour (I can take a photo tomorrow if you want to see it directly). One colour I played with was Amethyst by Fired Earth - they have great stuff; also look at their National Trust collection - some are really inspiring. From experience, you're better off ordering their paint online, as often you can't find the shade you need in shops that carry Fired Earth stuff. http://www.firedearth.com/paint/colour/reds-pinks-purples/amethyst Dulux Pressed Thistle is a great blue-grey, although I'm not sure if they sell it as exterior wood paint. I bought Dulux Chic Shadow two weeks ago and love it. And to convince you (I hope!) that purple is great for windows and doors, have a look at my own place - we even did the pergola in it :)) What I used is Cuprinol Lavender (http://www.homebase.co.uk/en/homebaseuk/cuprinol-garden-shades---lavender---25l-030486) as a last coat, the wood has had grey undercoat & primer and proper exterior paint underneath, as Cuprinol is not that long lasting, but I loved the colour and couldn't get it anywhere else so I used it against my decorator's advice (it still looks great after 2 years!) Hello, To be honest I really like your hallway. Probably you are tired of the overall look but somehow those colours work very well together giving a traditional style to your space. Of course you can go for white and light colour but first you should define your favourite style you would like your hallway to feature, even create a moodboard and than make decisions! You could consider painting the skirting and doors in white but you could still leave the front door in the same colour as your staircase, that could be a solution too. Staining/colouring oak floor without sanding?

If it is untreated and has nothing on it whatsoever there are many options. I have just put down unfinished wide oak planks and have treated them with a white Osmo tinted oil. You can brush it on and leave it or you can remove the excess after 20 minutes to give a sunbleached look. You then apply a coat of Osmo clear and you are done. This project was completed in late 2015. The owner had some replacement shingles sent recently so I assume the color is still available. You may want to call them directly.
